The Media Studies Program encourages the understanding and critical evaluation of new and old media technologies, the centrality of media in global and local culture, social life, politics and economics, and the contemporary and historical impact of media on individuals and societies. As defined by the Media Studies Program, “media” includes all forms of representational media (oral/aural, written, visual), mass media (print, television, radio, film), new media (digital multimedia, the Internet, networked media), their associated technologies, and the social and cultural institutions that enable them and are defined by them.

In our increasingly interconnected world, emerging media and artistic expressions interweave, shaping not only our communities but also the industries of the future. The Arts & Media major fosters practical and analytical abilities in students, equipping them to navigate and innovate within these evolving landscapes. Our major has a dual structure, enabling students to concentrate on either Art, as reflective and creative intervention, or Media, as the processes and industry of communication. A shared core of interdisciplinary classes fosters an exchange of ideas and analytical perspectives between these tracks.

This course discusses the mutual relations between media, their professions, and the society of our time. The course first addresses the contemporary media development and how different media converge. Then it discusses how this development influences the media professions and production practice. The course also develops a society perspective on contemporary media, including media ethics, sustainability, and the role of media in today's risk society.

Cinema and Media Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the history, analysis, and theorization of film and other technologically driven visual media, including television, video art, the Internet, and expanded cinema.

The film and media studies concentration will prepare digital native students for the ever-changing media landscape of the 21st century. Grounded in theory, while emphasizing practice along with Grinnell’s core value for social responsibility, the program will push you to discover your original creative voice, making meaning through the generation and critical interrogation of moving images and related forms.

Media Studies is an intercollegiate major offered jointly by Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona and Scripps Colleges, together forming Intercollegiate Media Studies (IMS). Media Studies is an inherently interdisciplinary field that emphasizes the cultural and historical importance of media and focuses on the production, circulation, and reception of texts and representations, which are analyzed in terms of aesthetics, meanings, and uses. IMS at the Claremont Colleges is one of the first undergraduate programs in the United States to combine theory, history, and practice, integrating critical studies and media production.

Media Arts 11/12 is designed to focus on analyzing and critiquing various forms of media and composing imagery that is both active and reactive. Students will be exploring digital photography, image editing with Photoshop and basic movie-making techniques in an effort to better understand the world of media.

As a student in the Interactive Media Minor at Marist, you'll gain essential knowledge and cutting-edge skills in digital media and design, as well as in the technologies that shape commerce and culture, giving you a competitive edge for your future. Although the Interactive Media Minor is housed with the Film, TV, Games, and Interactive Media Department, it is completely interdisciplinary, which means that students from any major can integrate the minor into their studies.

The course provides an introduction to the physical and optical laws behind photographic image production, with practical exercises designed to explore the problems and benefits connected to these facts. The course also explores; in theory and through practical exercises the fundamental rules regarding composition of visual elements and the communicative effects of photographic images. In addition the course provides lectures in the history of photography and photo journalism, as well as basic ethics and law concerning the topic.Teaching is offered in the form of lectures, individual exercises and plenum discussions around submitted studentmade images and images produced by professional photographers; based on given criteria as found in literature on visual communication. Some lectures may take place at evening time and/or during weekends. VUC reserves non-commercial user rights to images submitted during the course.

Covering some more advanced radio production techniques, this course will explore the art of editing and mixing audio for radio.

In this online course, you can take it at your own pace. Christiane Amanpour and Joan Lunden will help you improve your media literacy. You’ll also learn how to fact-check what you see on the internet.
