5 Marine Biology Course Programs

In this course, we will explore the diverse marine ecosystems of the Pacific side of Costa Rica through immersive field studies, we will focus on rocky reef ecology, mangrove ecosystems, intertidal zone ecology, plankton ecology, marine biodiversity, conservation practices, local fishing, and the role of genetics in marine conservation.

The Foundation Degree in Marine Biology and Rehabilitation will give you an overview of marine biology, ecology, and conservation as well as practical skills in ecology, aquatic animal health and husbandry, and the rescue and rehabilitation of marine life. You will investigate marine habitats and biodiversity from estuaries to the deep ocean, explore how a range of marine organisms and ecosystem's function, examine the threats they face and critically evaluate how to conserve them.

The Marine Science Department Award comprises 21 units and signifies that students have a broad background in the physical and biological processes of the world's oceans and the tools and techniques with which they are studied. The curriculum includes courses in Biology, Marine Technology, and Earth & Planetary Sciences and is especially suited to students interested in the fields of mariculture, boating and recreation, skin and SCUBA diving, fishing, scientific research, and marine science education. The student pursuing the Marine Science Award must consult with the Faculty Adviser early to formulate a program of study and to ensure space in classes.

Conservation of Marine Megafauna will focus on the biology, ecology, and conservation of the largest of all marine animals. As we sail the world’s oceans aboard the MV World Odyssey, we will spend time on deck to be on the look-out for these fantastic creatures.

This advanced seminar reviews physiological, anatomical, and biochemical adaptations in marine mammals, and is suited for students interested either in advanced marine mammal studies or marine mammal husbandry.
