The purpose of these courses are to produce students who can demonstrate a critical understanding and skill in the fields of language, literacies, and literature as well as research in the field of educational linguistics with the purpose of engaging positively with language diversity issues encountered in today’s society. IEP offers an online eight-week Intensive English Program six times a year in exciting Los Angeles for ESL students with academic or professional goals, including passing the TOEFL for entrance into an American university. The 21-26 hours per week IEP offers a coordinated program of conversation, grammar, writing, reading/vocabulary, pronunciation and listening. Students from all over the world enroll in this multi-level program and can continue to improve their skills by advancing from session to session. Qualified students from outside the U.S. are eligible for a student visa. Individual courses may also be taken by part-time students.

Language and the Mind is the cross-disciplinary study of human language -- combining studies in psychology, linguistics, and modern languages. The Language and the Mind minor studies the connections between human cognition, language processes, verbal and written language structures, and language acquisition.

As an accredited provider, Eynesbury offers English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) to help you prepare for your study and career goals. Eynesbury College is an accredited provider of English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS).Each ELICOS level is studied over two 5-week modules. The total study required for each level is 10 weeks. Students can expect their IELTS to improve 0.5 for each 10 week block of successful study.

Students interested in the study of more than one foreign language from the perspectives of literature or linguistics may combine two languages or one language and linguistics into a Group Language major.A total of eleven courses is required for the Group Language major: five courses for each half of the major and one course emphasizing methods or theory.

Students majoring in any discipline other than English are eligible to minor in English. The minor encourages breadth of knowledge in literary studies and offers experience in critical analysis. Fifteen credits in English courses must be completed. Four out of five of these classes must be taken at Florida Atlantic University, and at least four out of the five classes must be taken in the English Department.

In order to place students in English classes most suitable for their current language levels, we conduct Free English Language Placement Tests. The following activities will be conducted in order to determine students’ levels of English: A pre-arrival multiple-choice English language placement test. A comprehensive English language placement test on Day 1. An oral interview with the Director of Studies during Orientation Day.

Thai Language and Society focus on studying the Thai language and culture and understanding Thai history and society.

Black Studies at Occidental College is a transnational and interdisciplinary study of the history, scholarship, arts and culture of people of the African diaspora. As a heterogeneous and diverse discipline, Black Studies encourages rigorous critical contemplation and debate. It engages with and expands upon the vibrant intellectual tradition of critical engagement already established at the college. Students of Black Studies learn to examine the world and their local communities with an eye to black people's important and sometimes overlooked contributions, and to understand the ways the experiences of people of African descent have shaped and continue to inform campaigns for human rights.

Courses in Greek and/or Latin programs provide the best window into the culture and ethos of the ancient world, and consequently, each of our majors and minors is built upon this premise. Apart from the intellectual discipline, many students benefit from a study of the foundational languages of the legal and medical professions and the hard sciences. The University is a member of the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, and majors are encouraged to spend a semester studying there.
