20 Interdisciplinary Studies Course Programs

The Semester Study Abroad program welcomes students to UCT for one semester while pursuing a degree elsewhere.

Choose a study abroad program at Lorenzo de' Medici (LdM) - one of Italy’s most well-established international institutions in higher education. Students can choose between a range of courses in multiple disciplines and customize their study program to suit their academic and personal goals.

The American Language and Culture Program runs this program, where international students can study at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) in South Los Angeles, California.

Our Study Abroad Program invites international students to apply to study here for one or two semesters. Successful completion of units can count towards your home institution degree.

A joint effort by Africana Studies, American Studies and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies, the Consortium for Critical Interdisciplinary Studies (CCIS) is dedicated to creating a vibrant intellectual community across disciplinary boundaries and fostering the in-depth study of race and ethnicity at Barnard College. CCIS offers students and faculty the intellectual space to develop transformative frameworks for thinking through issues of ethnicity and race in both local and global contexts.

Fashion is an economic force, a culture industry and a powerful way to convey identity, politics, status, and personality. This is a groundbreaking area of specialization that offers the chance to study the phenomenon of fashion from a variety of standpoints and in a unique interdisciplinary framework. The CUNY Graduate Center — located on Fifth Avenue in a landmark building, the former B. Altman department store — is the only University in the US that is not a design or fashion school to offer a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Fashion Studies. This is a groundbreaking area of specialization that offers the chance to study the phenomenon of fashion from a variety of standpoints and in a unique interdisciplinary framework, and will enable students to serve as adjunct instructors in the CUNY colleges and beyond where fashion courses are taught.

As we listen to people discussing critical issues facing individuals, communities, countries and the planet, what do we see happening? Is communication occurring? Do the sides hear each other and seek to understand another point of view, even if in disagreement? Is the goal truth or the best policy or victory for a side? What skills, approaches, and conditions lead to genuine discussion and productive argument? How can we cultivate these as individuals and communities? This Argument and Inquiry seminar addresses these questions in both theory and practice by allowing students the opportunity to read, view, discuss, and analyze theoretical discussions and case studies drawn from the past and present on a range of controversial topics.

At Dickinson, we encourage our students to seek connections. We emphasize this ability to draw together diverse information and insights and make sense of complexity—to connect the dots and read between the lines. This focus is embodied academically most clearly in our commitment to interdisciplinarity. While traditional disciplines also draw insights from many fields, interdisciplinary programs focus on this skill most intensely.

In recent decades, issues related to the environment have emerged as key concerns at local, national, and international levels. The Environmental Studies major and interdisciplinary minor are designed to give students broad exposure to a range of environmental issues and to provide multidisciplinary approaches to understanding the complexity of factors that affect the environment and our understanding of it.

Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary field that explores the interconnection between humans and the natural environment. Modern environmental issues reflect the complex interactions of natural and social systems at global and local scales, and the resulting impacts on the Earth have led many to ask whether humankind has entered into a new epoch in the planet’s history, one in which humans are now a key driver in the change of Earth systems.

The interdisciplinary major in Educational Studies is designed for students who desire a liberal arts education blended with real-world experience and research methods, whether they aspire to become educators, activists, policymakers, or simply in their role as more informed citizens. Our faculty integrate the theory, policy, and practice of schooling, as well as its broader relationship with society, through collaborative learning with classrooms and communities in the city of Hartford. Understand and re-imagine education as a vital social process that extends far beyond schools. In education studies, you will delve into the sociology, political economy, cultural foundations, philosophy and history of education. Gain practical experience in educational settings and through study abroad, plus conduct original research through our two-semester senior capstone.

In addition to traditional academic disciplines, the College also sustains programs of interdisciplinary study to reveal complicated realities not disclosed by any single discipline. In recognition of this, Bowdoin’s faculty have created several interdisciplinary majors that bring together interconnected fields. These span multiple divisions—encompassing the humanities, social sciences, natural science, and mathematics—and give students opportunities to explore complex intersections of disciplinary methods and content.
