The GIS and Remote Sensing Core Facility was created in 2001 in response to a  rapidly growing need for GeoSpatial Technology training and support in a variety of disciplines. The Binghamton University GIS and Remote Sensing Core Facility supports the research mission of the university.

The SP2ARK - Space Plasma Propulsion: Advancements, Research, and Know-How Seasonal School will introduce participants to the topic of plasma-based electric propulsion (EP), which represents an enabling technology for a growing number of space applications, from low Earth orbit constellations to interplanetary missions. Interest in EP systems has accelerated in recent years, thanks to the technological maturity achieved by several concepts and the growth of a new space economy.

Geography and atmospheric sciences are related fields that study the Earth's physical environment, including its landforms, climates, weather patterns, and interactions between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere. While geography focuses on spatial patterns and processes at various scales, atmospheric sciences delve specifically into the study of the Earth's atmosphere and its dynamics.

The course introduces the concepts and application of geographic information systems and science (GIS). It is designed for students without former GIS experience. It focuses on the use of GIS for scientific inquiry and its application for real-world problem-solving.

Classes offered in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program will provide a hands-on approach to education that will prepare you to work with GIS in the field. The program will prepare you to address advanced topics in problem-solving, decision-making, modeling, programming, and data management, using 2D and 3D data.

Geography combines natural and social sciences to explore human interaction with the environment and the social, political, economic and cultural forces that shape it. Geography, a word derived from the Greek for earth writing, is the study of the biosphere and the human and nonhuman forces that have shaped the Earth's diverse terrestrial environments through time. A discipline with roots in classical antiquity, geography has been called the Mother of the Sciences, an epistemic claim derived from the close relationship between exploration, mapping, and the production of knowledge. Critical geography is the continuing pursuit of geographic knowledge combined with the analysis of power dynamics in the production of spatial knowledge and the experiences and practices that constitute space and place in everyday life.

Cultural geography is the interdisciplinary study of spatial practices through which individuals and sociocultural groups create meaningful environments and ascribe order to landscapes, nature, and the terrestrial realm as a whole. Drawing from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, the discipline examines the ways in which humans experience, define, delimit, and shape spaces and places through time. This course is a hands-on introduction to major themes of cultural geography, with regular project work and several field trips. Independent studies and several group excursions in a variety of wild, agricultural, small town, and urban landscapes in the Berkshires and beyond will provide practice in research techniques including field journal writing; the use of narratives, oral histories, archives, and literary sources; map reading and interpretation; and basic cartography.

GIS uses the application of computer models to represent spatial features on the earth's surface.GIS is computing technology that helps understand spatial patterns and relationships by analyzing spatial data and using cartography techniques to present results in a variety of formats such as tables, graphs, and maps.

As a geography major or minor you will learn about the impacts of social, economic, environmental, and political processes that shape spaces and places, the science of earth systems, the human dimensions of global environmental and climate change, and the use of geographic information science (GIS) and remote sensing techniques to represent and analyze data and knowledge at different spatial scales.

Immediate crises, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, and ongoing challenges, such as overuse and pollution of ecosystems, point to the importance of studying the intersection of earth processes with human societies. Students interested in understanding these interactions as they are approached both by Earth Science and by Geography can elect an interdisciplinary major that combines these two disciplines. In Earth Science, students gain an understanding of natural processes that impact the distribution and use of resources such as water, fossil fuels, and soil, as well as natural hazards such as climate change, tsunamis, and earthquakes. In Geography, students learn about the spatial distribution of physical and human phenomena and how human societies are shaped by, and also change, the natural world.

UFSC Geography Program offers two types of degrees: an undergraduate degree that prepares for recognition activities, surveys, geo-economic and physico-geographical studies, and other tasks in the general and specific fields of Geography, and an undergraduate teaching degree that prepares students for a career in primary and secondary school teaching. The program belongs to the Department of Geosciences at the School of Human Sciences and Philosophy. It is linked to five specific areas of this department: physical geography, human geography, cartography, geology and oceanography.
