The Education minor, taken in conjunction with an undergraduate student’s major area of study, is designed to provide insight into careers in various educational fields as well as an appreciation for the role education plays in society. The minor does not lead to teacher certification.

Whether you intend to teach, pursue work in policy, research, or administration, or simply want to be an active and vocal citizen, the education department will prepare you to think critically and creatively about the problems and potential solutions in the discipline. Through the inquiry-led curriculum, independent research, and Mentored Advanced Projects, you’ll develop flexibility in all your pursuits. If you’d like to earn your teaching license, you’ll major in the humanities, social sciences, or sciences, take the education courses for your secondary licensure (grades 5–12) or your K-12 licensure in ESL, and do a semester of student teaching.

The education studies concentration is for anyone who wants to reflect on their own educational experiences and the systems, ideologies, and histories embedded in those experiences.

Although the EHS department does not offer an undergraduate major, the Teaching, Learning, and Technology program offers an Education minor, as well as a five-year program leading to a master’s degree and certification in a teaching field. Across the five academic programs, the department offers a variety of master’s degrees (M.Ed., M.S., and M.A.) and doctoral degrees (Ph.D. and Ed.D.), as well as an Educational Specialist degree (Ed.S.).

Educational Studies at Rhodes College strives to advance justice, democracy, and equity in underserved public schools, particularly in Memphis, through our interdisciplinary programs, partnerships, scholarship, and advocacy.

The Semester at Sea Lifelong Learning Program provides adult learners, who are 30 years of age or older, with an opportunity to join the SAS academic community. Lifelong Learners add a valuable generational element to the shipboard community. They are retirees, professionals on leave, or only adventurous travellers who desire to study with bright, enthusiastic undergraduate students worldwide.

Students can achieve their goals in HSEC preparation (reading, writing, math, social studies, and science) through various methods. Instruction is either on a one-on-one basis or in small groups.
