In this free online course, learn the most important duties of firefighters and study fire safety standards.

This course complies with SI 2015 No. 410, and is intended to give all candidates basic knowledge of fire safety, fire prevention and an understanding of the hazards of fire. Candidates will understand the need for prompt, safe and correct action to be taken on the outbreak of a fire, and will experience the use of extinguishers on live fires.

This course is based on the Merchant Navy Training Board syllabus approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and an STCW Certificate is issued on completion of the course. The course is designed to give a comprehensive understanding of the theory of fire as it applies in a shipboard environment, and familiarity with the use and maintenance of both fixed and portable fire fighting equipment, including breathing apparatus.

The course is designed to give candidates a basic understanding of types of fires, methods of extinguishing them and the onboard firefighting equipment. Candidates are introduced to basic equipment maintenance, the use of breathing apparatus and search and rescue techniques as well as live firefighting.

The course complies with Merchant Navy Training Board guidelines. The National Maritime Training Centre is an approved training centre and issues the STCW certificate upon successful completion. Section A-VI/1 of STCW (paragraph 3) states that ‘Seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 2 in basic training shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence, to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A VI/1-2.’

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) for Restricted Firearms at Selkirk College provides comprehensive training on the safe handling, storage, and transportation of restricted firearms in Canada.
