Students who wish to pursue courses within these fields will be equipped with the necessary skills to enable them to formulate deeper interests and knowledge in theatre, dance and related fields such as film, television, advertising and teaching and/or preparation for pursuing research degrees (for students wishing to enter academia). Students will be exposed to the educational contexts of arts and culture and will explore some of the key discourses in Dance, including Dance and Cultural formation, History and Aesthetics. Coursework will be by seminars, practical workshops, engagement with on and off campus dance groups, conferences, and symposia. Bryn Mawr College's partnership with Haverford College allows students to major in Fine Arts and take Fine Arts courses at Haverford. Small class sizes and one-on-one teaching allows dedicated instructors to work alongside their students to maximize their education. There is a focus on strong foundation courses that are essential to a traditional studio art education as well as access to digital art making methods. The Blackburn Art Department is fully committed to helping students achieve their goals, earn their degree, and embark on a career in the Fine Arts. The Visual Arts Center houses a state-of-the-art graphics lab as well as a fully functional photography studio and darkroom. Eighteen iMacs support the entire Adobe Creative Cloud as well as several Autodesk applications and Blender. Printers include wide format, hi-res photo and 3D capabilities.

Students pursue a rigorous program designed to develop the technical and analytical skills necessary to create art in one of five disciplines: drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, or sculpture. Our vibrant program is further enriched by Haverford’s liberal arts environment; our studios and classrooms are colored by the diverse academic experiences our students possess and by campus-wide programming that brings art into dialogue with an array of other subjects.

Students may take studio courses in many media, from sculpture and drawing to video, photography and printmaking. We also offer interdisciplinary courses organized around conceptual questions and themes. Classes take place in studios with spaces for hand-setting type, using bandsaws, creating installations and designing computer graphics. All senior art majors have their own studio spaces.
