The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) is Lehigh’s home for teaching and research in the areas of ecology, environmental science, and geological sciences. Matters of environmental quality and natural resources will increasingly impact people and society in the years to come, and the EES department offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs that provide students with an understanding of Earth’s biosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere, with an emphasis on how these components function as an integrated Earth system.

The program includes a sequence of geology courses with additional courses in hydrology, meteorology, astronomy and biology that are required by New York State Education Department. The program has flexibility, making it possible for you to enter the geology consulting field instead of teaching. In addition, the earth science major leads to qualifying you for licensure as a professional geologist.

Faculty and students in the Department of Earth and Oceanographic Science (EOS) at Bowdoin investigate fundamental questions about our planet’s past, present, and future. In our courses and research programs, we sample rocks, sediments, shells and waters to reconstruct Earth’s geologic history, including past climates. We study Earth’s systems at all scales—atoms to oceans—and use state of the art instrumentation and data analysis to unravel Earth’s past so that we can better understand and prepare for our future.

In Earth Science, students learn how development affects water resources and pollution, how soils form and what makes them support the food we eat, about our changing oceans and climate, about environmental justice and geohazards in the Anthropocene, and about the history of our Earth, its climates, and the creatures that evolved here. In Geography, students learn how political, economic, cultural, and environmental forces shape spatial patterns and flows of activities, resources, people, and ideas in our world. We explore themes such as sustainable landscapes and communities, global political economic systems, cities and planetary urbanization, and the spatial underpinnings of social justice and human rights.

The Solar System and Beyond is a fun and informative course for those fascinated by our solar system's mysteries. The course will feature an exploration of Earth, the solar system, stars, and galaxies.

The Geological and Planetary Science (GPS) major is designed to provide its students with a thorough training in the geological and planetary sciences and, whenever possible, to integrate these studies with the core curriculum courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology that all students take during their first years at Caltech. Students may elect to pursue a specialization track under the GPS major, which include geology, geobiology, geochemistry, geophysics, and planetary science.

Geoscientists explore for natural resources, like metal ores, industrial minerals and fossil fuels. They map and monitor changes in nature, from landscapes and climate to the Earth system as a whole.

As a geology major or minor, you will study the Earth’s processes in classrooms, labs and in the field. In Geobiology we ask questions that span the range of geologic time, from the emergence and evolution of life on the earliest Earth to its occurrence in weird and wonderful extreme environments to its role in shaping modern biogeochemical cycles. These studies often blur the boundaries between geology, geochemistry, environmental science, microbiology, and molecular genetics. We offer both an undergraduate major and a graduate Ph.D. program. Our students and postdocs go on to do academic research in a variety of biological and Earth science fields, and to work in a variety of industries from pharmaceuticals to genetics to medicine.

The degree course in "Geological Sciences and Technologies for the Environment" (class L-34 Geological Sciences) has the aim to train a professional figure who operates in geological and geo-environmental analysis, in procurement and in sustainable management of geo-resources, in the study and protection of the sea and the territory with a view to sustainability environment and the protection of geodiversity, as well as in the reduction of risks deriving from natural hazards and from improper use of natural resources (prevention).
