Stories can invite us into an unthinkable reality, they help us learn from the past or even see the future, they offer archetypes of good and evil and can very well play with our imagination as well as logic. A good story can sell everything – not only does this apply to books and movies, but also to everything we do in our professional and personal life. We need a story to design a strong presentation, create an effective post for social media, manage an interview, deliver a business pitch, or write an academic essay.

Our dedicated and established writers and editors will teach you the craft and techniques of creative and professional writing. Find your voice through both introductory and advanced writing workshops and courses in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, script writing and professional writing. In addition to training your creative side, writing arts at SUNY Plattsburgh includes courses in professional writing — such as grant writing — as well as other opportunities to learn the business-end of writing. 

The Creative Writing Minor teaches the fundamentals of creating original work while providing opportunities for the exploration of blended genres and interdisciplinary work. A minor in Creative Writing complements majors from a wide array of departments and colleges.Minor in Creative Writing. The creative writing minor consists of six courses (18 hours) in creative writing and literature. Four of these courses will be in creative writing (12 hours) and must adhere to the following sequence: CW 1040 Intro to Creative Writing, two Lower Division Creative Writing courses (at the 2000-level), and an Upper Division course (4050). In addition, two courses will be in literature (6 hours). (excluding CW 2200 from lower-division courses). All courses must be completed with grades of C or better. This minor is intended to be used with any major and must be designed in conjunction with a creative writing advisor. Each course must be passed with a grade of C or better.

The creative writing concentration is an opportunity for students with a demonstrated interest and aptitude for creative writing to develop their skills in fiction, poetry, drama, and/or creative nonfiction in the context of a formalized program. Creative writing courses at Haverford are open to all students. Only a handful of English majors per year, however, are accepted into the creative writing concentration. Creative writing concentrators take two courses in creative writing (one of which can count toward the English major) and write a senior thesis composed of an original creative text (usually poetry, fiction or drama) and a rigorous critical introduction.

Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary field that investigates the forms of social life and culture produced in today’s interconnected world. Understanding the complexity of global culture requires mastery over the tools of interpretation and knowledge production. It requires students to “read, write, and translate the world.” Global Cultural Studies courses combine the strengths of the social sciences, the humanities, and creative practice, by drawing on interpretive methods and theories from literary and translation studies, cultural anthropology, history, sociology, media studies, film studies, journalism, communications, economics, and more.

The concentration in creative writing offers students the opportunity to explore an array of writing styles and genres, thereby helping them discover and develop their own voices. Beyond the introductory course in which students write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, students take specialized workshops offered each term, as well as tutorials and independent studies. A number of Simon's Rock graduates have gone on to great success in graduate programs in writing, and have published their own stories, poems, essays, novels, and biographies. However, the concentration is intended to assist all students who wish to make creative writing a part of their course of study, rather than only those students interested in writing as a profession.

This course of study cultivates the power of individual expression within a vibrant community of writers. Stanford’s Creative Writing Program--one of the best-known in the country--cultivates the power of individual expression within a vibrant community of writers. The Minor in Creative Writing offers a structured environment in which students interested in writing fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction develop their skills while receiving an introduction to literary forms. Students may choose a concentration in either prose or poetry. Creative Writing minors will participate in workshop-based courses and may have an opportunity to work independently with Stegner Fellows, Stanford’s distinguished writers-in-residence.

The creative writing minor emphasizes small workshop classes in fiction and poetry, offered at three levels and culminating in a creative project in the senior year. Courses are also taught in memoir, screenwriting and creative nonfiction. Limited to 15 participants, these workshops focus on finding and developing the strengths of each student’s writing while providing instruction in technique. Peer critique and readings in contemporary literature—often involving visits to campus by accomplished writers of our time—are at the heart of the program.

The KPU Creative Writing Department offers students an opportunity to explore the craft of Creative Writing while earning a Minor. We offer award-winning faculty, small class sizes, and a rigorous approach to the discipline of writing. The department is known for a strong sense of community which supports writers to discover their voice and develop their craft.

The College Writing Program seeks to equip students for academic success and postgraduate careers that require knowledge of advanced communication and writing skills. We provide instruction in composition theory and practice and in rhetoric across diverse traditions. Our courses teach students about the forms of writing they are likely to encounter, provide opportunities for students to rethink and refine their writing processes and habits, and teach students strategies or techniques for adapting their writing styles to specific audiences, disciplines, and genres. Our courses also span a range of genres in composition and rhetoric, including cultural rhetorics, visual rhetorics, creative nonfiction, civic writing, and journalism. Through our interdisciplinary curriculum, our courses ask students to examine writing and rhetoric as embedded in culture and to consider the relations among writing, rhetoric, identity, literacy, and power. Our program is committed to enacting the college's mission through our curricular focus on diversity and equity.

At W&L, creative writing is embedded in the study of literature. Students read widely; practice critical analysis; study the forms, modes and histories of literature in English; and develop their own writing through creative exercises and workshop critique. Small classes, dedicated faculty and a lively program of extracurricular offerings foster a supportive and challenging writing community. W&L has cultivated great student and faculty writing for decades through the English Department and the literary magazine. This minor will provide students the knowledge of four genres: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and drama.
