The Geochemistry Minor is for science students (e.g. chemistry majors) with an interest in the chemical aspects of Earth science.

This course is designed to introduce students to the key aspects of science (biology, chemistry and physics). It will equip students with vital knowledge and skills to enable them to flourish academically and personally.

Chemistry provides the connection between molecular concepts and the complex systems found in nature. Our courses stress the understanding of chemical principles, as well as the experimental basis of the science. We provide a strong foundation for graduate work in chemistry, biochemistry, and related areas. We prepare students for careers in industry, teaching, and the medical and health sciences.

The Barnard College Chemistry Department offers courses for undergraduates who plan to major or minor in the physical and life sciences, as well as for students pursuing other liberal arts degrees. The department offers majors and minors in chemistry and biochemistry, both approved by the American Chemical Society. In a three-year sequence of core courses, students gain familiarity with the basic areas of the field: inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, and biological chemistry. Extensive laboratory work prepares students for success in graduate or professional research programs. The department contains modern laboratories designed for coursework and independent projects, and students may undertake independent research projects under faculty guidance during the academic year or over the summer.

Chemistry is the study of the composition, synthesis, physical properties, and transformations of materials, including biological substances, technological materials, and natural products. Through hands-on experience with modern instrumentation throughout the curriculum, a broad array of advanced coursework, and engagement in active discussion and collaboration with the chemistry faculty, the goals of chemistry.

The program in chemistry is designed to meet the needs of students who are pursuing chemistry as part of a pre-professional course or to increase their knowledge of the natural sciences. Our program recognizes that chemistry as a discipline is a core science but is also intertwined with a number of other fields, including physics, biology and math/computer science. In fact, some of the most exciting areas in science today are found in the interdisciplinary fields of chemical physics, chemical biology, theoretical/computational chemistry, environmental studies and materials science.

The Chemistry Department offers chemistry and biochemistry degrees, which are interdisciplinary in nature and deal with the composition, properties, and interactions of substances. They employ techniques from mathematics and physics and have applications in all of the sciences and engineering. The chemistry degree is typically viewed as having five major areas: analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, and physical. The chemistry major at Trinity is structured to provide a balanced presentation of these areas. The biochemistry degree is also structured to focus on learning in these areas but also emphasizes the biological sciences and biological chemistry.

Our chemistry courses stress understanding of chemical principles, as well as the experimental basis of the science by developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The aim of the Chemistry Department at Alexander College is to provide exceptional opportunities for students in learning the fundamental principles of chemistry through a combination of engaging lectures and interactive laboratory programs.

From hands-on experiments with state-of-the-art instrumentation to engagement in original research with faculty, Wabash chemistry majors are continually challenged to become investigators. The Wabash chemistry department possesses an active and enthusiastic faculty, who teach a rigorous curriculum in a modern and well-equipped facility. Wabash chemistry classes emphasize instruction in fundamentals as key to the creative use of chemistry in the classroom and the laboratory. The Wabash College 3D Printing & Fabrication Center serves as a nexus for educational STEM and STEAM activities on campus and is housed in the chemistry department. Chemistry is an experimental discipline that uses applied principles and new skills to solve scientific problems. Through foundational courses and collaborative research with professors, students gain an understanding of chemical processes and acquire the tools to apply that knowledge in innovative ways. Faculty-mentored student projects emphasize modern techniques and instrumentation and use Colby’s research-grade facilities and laboratories. Recent research has included the synthesis of supramolecular structures, the detection of superoxide in natural water sources, and the molecular basis of cancer therapy.

A concentration in chemistry gives a fundamental understanding of those chemical processes that affect all our lives, allowing us to make informed choices about a range of issues from energy and food consumption to our relationship to the physical environment. The chemistry concentration also provides a solid background that, when augmented by additional coursework or a second concentration in the sciences, will prepare the student to pursue graduate studies in chemistry or a health-related area. Students with a concentration in chemistry may enter into fields and positions such as biotechnology, environmental chemistry, environmental law, food chemistry, forensics, medicine, and teaching.

Chemistry is the science of molecules: what they are, how they are made, and what they do. We are embedded in a world of naturally occurring and synthetic molecules. A familiarity with chemistry is not only fundamental to other sciences, but is relevant to government, art, economics, and archaeology.

Students interested in the physical sciences who wish to concentrate their studies in Chemistry may choose to take this minor. Formative in nature, this program option allows students to delve into the complex and exciting study of the chemical world. Fueled by curiosity and an aptitude for the sciences, students in the Chemistry minor will have the opportunity to expand their horizons and career opportunities with the knowledge gained from the lectures, labs, and experiences in in this program.
