Spanish is a global language spoken by over 400 million people around the world. It is the official language in 21 countries of which 19 are located in South America. Spanish feeds a diverse group of Spanish-speaking countries with their own vibrant and rich cultures. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of the Spanish language by learning and practicing basic oral, listening, reading and writing skills with an emphasis on developing conversation and comprehension skills, as well as providing a general understanding of Spanish grammar. The course will also promote cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking countries.

Using the University Transfer Program, students are able to explore their interests through first- and second-year university courses that may be transferred to a college or university in the second or third program year.

Biology courses focus on understanding and appreciation of life through studying structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and sustainability of living organisms. Instructors incorporate a variety of activities that engage students in the learning experience, including case studies, student-led projects, and hands-on laboratory experiments.

A major focus of the courses is on the development of skills in computational thinking and programming through practice, critical thinking, and innovation. All components of every Computer Science design have some active learning strategies incorporated into them such as think-pair share, debate, programming or research projects, and multimedia presentations.

The focus of our courses is on the development of students’ mathematical thinking and behavior which consists of thinking in logical manner, constructing models to describe phenomena, and problem-solving. We use various active learning methods such as interactive lectures, individual and group activities, project-based learning, problem-solving, and audio-visual presentations.

A major focus of our Asian studies courses is to develop cultural awareness and deeper appreciation for the cultures one of the largest immigrant groups in the Greater Vancouver region. Instructors use a wide variety of active learning methods including film, class discussions and projects, multi-media presentations and exploring local Asian cultural/historical sites.

Our chemistry courses stress understanding of chemical principles, as well as the experimental basis of the science by developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The aim of the Chemistry Department at Alexander College is to provide exceptional opportunities for students in learning the fundamental principles of chemistry through a combination of engaging lectures and interactive laboratory programs.

Our courses focus on the development in understanding, problem-solving, collecting experimental data, and relating physics to local and global issues. Introductory physics, including Newtonian mechanics, gravitation, electricity, and optics. This course is designed for non-science students. Not open to students with credit for Physics 12 or equivalent. Economics courses provide individuals with a logical and consistent framework for understanding basic concepts such as market equilibrium, social welfare and economic policies. A variety of active learning methods are used in economics classes. Film, class discussion, and multi-media presentations help engage students in active learning. Economics provides a strong insight into the economic and public policy environment in which virtually every profession, such as finance, journalism and health care, will be pursued.

International Studies is an established interdisciplinary field within the social sciences, but is relatively new owing to its connection with the emergence of a truly global society in the 20th century. Mainstream courses in international studies draw upon resources from political science, economics, history, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, feminist theory and philosophy, global/critical race theory, media and technology studies, arts and music, and even the natural sciences as needed to inform our empirical understanding of “the international” terrain.

The Associate of Arts Degree (Psychology) is 2-year, 60 credit, multidisciplinary program that includes arts courses with a focus on psychology (minimum 18 credits). Students can expect to use up to date technology and interactive online and in-class learning tools that engage students and promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Graduating students may move to entry-level positions in health and social services, human resources, and sales, to name a few, or may also choose to work towards advanced degrees.

The focus of our courses is on the broad understanding of the statistical methods and computational and presentation skills for statistical problem-solving. We also develop students’ ability to systematically think about how to describe the world around us and use data to make decisions and predictions. Statistical research methodology and associated analysis techniques aimed at a non-mathematical audience (non-calculus based). This course introduces procedures that are most commonly used in the investigation of survey and experimental data.

A major focus of the courses is on the development of skills in research, writing, critical reading, and critical thinking. Both Instructors and students use a wide variety of active learning methods including film, class discussions and projects, guest speakers and multi-media presentations. Studying history significantly supports students in developing important skills sets including communication (oral and written), research, critical thinking and analytic skills that are essential job requirements for future employment in the fields of business, industry, education, government and public service and others.

The Associate of Arts degree is a two-year undergraduate program offered by many institutions in the province of British Columbia and beyond. The Associate Degree program is designed to provide broad-based knowledge and experiences which lay a foundation for further undergraduate study or entry to the workforce. Students within the Associate of Arts (Mathematics) Degree program will gain knowledge in solving equations, calculus, and programming, and will develop their quantitative and analytical skills. Students will also complete courses in Humanities and Social Sciences to further explore their interests.
