Beep - Biology for Human Space Exploration Seasonal School will introduce participants to the urgent topic of space biology, a discipline that aims at developing a better understanding of how life operates in built environments in space, or in ground-based experiments that mimic aspects of spaceflight, to prepare for future human exploration missions far from Earth.

The Biology minor broadly focuses on the various aspects of biological sciences. Students completing a minor in biology should acquire a basic knowledge of the biological sciences and become familiar with the scientific method and its applications. The course listings below are a representation of what this minor requires. Select elective courses may also be included. Students may have to take additional courses to fulfill the prerequisites of the required courses.

The general biology major is designed for students who would like a broad-based biology curriculum. The major starts with an introductory course in biology (60-level BIO courses), taken during freshman year. As sophomores and juniors, students will take 5 of 6 Bio Foundations courses (80-level BIO courses). Additional foundational courses include two lab courses (BIO 45 and either BIO 46 or 47), chemistry, physics, math, and statistics. As juniors and seniors, students will take 23 units of upper-division electives from Biology (BIO), Hopkins Marine Station (BIOHOPK), and from the approved out-of-department elective list for the major.

Course in Biology Through a combination of formal coursework, laboratory courses, field courses, and research projects with faculty, our students explore biological complexity from the inner workings of cells to ecosystems. Moreover, our students are introduced to the pressing questions that remain in the life sciences and are exposed to the ways that scientists at Sewanee and beyond are working to address these questions.

The Biology Department is committed to preparing students for success in graduate school, professional school and as career candidates. Biology majors have faculty advisers in the department to help them select courses that will meet their individual goals. Courses span the spectrum of biological disciplines that prepare students for advanced studies in a wide variety of fields. 100-level courses serve as the entry courses to the major. The 200- and 300-level biology courses give students access to a broad range of biological knowledge and technical skills.

The Bio-Medical Sciences Department Award recognizes achievement by students interested in careers in the allied health fields, physical/health education, recreation and sports technology. Core courses consist of Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Medical Microbiology. In addition to the core curriculum, students may select 18 units of electives from an approved listing of courses in biology, anthropology, art, chemistry, physical/health education, recreation and human biology. The courses are selected in consultation with the Faculty Adviser for Bio-Medical Sciences. The Faculty Adviser will then submit this program of study to the Biological Sciences Department for review and approval. To qualify for the Bio-Medical sciences Department Award, students must complete each of the courses in the approved program of study with a grade of "C" or better, It is important that the student pursuing a Bio-Medical Sciences Department Award consult with the Faculty Adviser early for program approval.

The biology curriculum, supported by physical sciences and mathematics, is designed to provide students with a strong background in the principles of biology and their application to current research questions and biological resource management challenges. The Department of Biology offers a dynamic learning environment, exciting research and training opportunities, and intensive mentoring of students at all levels.
