150 Biological and Life Sciences Course Programs

Respond to the needs of individuals, families, and groups coping with acute chronic illness or mental health disorders in diverse healthcare settings.

Chemical technology has produced various products related to food, clothing, and shelter for human beings and made a large contribution to human civilization. Further development of chemical technology now requires knowledge of biotechnology as well as knowledge of chemistry.

Focus on microbiology principles and infection control strategies in healthcare settings. This course prepares students to manage and prevent infections effectively.

Field and lab identification, systematics, natural history, and ecology of vascular plants as components of natural communities.

Biology entails the study of the entire process of life from its beginning, through its development, reproduction, and to its cessation and decay. Many of the new developments and discoveries in this dynamic field are the result of interdisciplinary cooperation between biologists, chemists, physicists, and computer scientists. These researchers have added considerably to our understanding of the basic principles and mechanisms of living systems at cellular, molecular, organismic, population, and ecological levels.

Biology is the fundamental study of life and living systems. It is a field that is interdisciplinary by nature and constantly evolving. The educational goals of our curriculum are to foster student excitement about biology and promote science, as a process and way of knowing, not merely content knowledge. We offer a strong foundation in biology to prepare for diverse and successful careers and to enrich our students’ lifelong engagement with the world in all its diversity and complexity.

Students who complete this program will understand the importance of the scientific method in studying natural phenomena. They will develop hypotheses, design experiments, critically evaluate data, and communicate scientific data and ideas orally and in writing. Students gain a global perspective by participating in semester- and year-long study abroad programs or in three-week intensive courses, such as Tropical Marine Biology at the Roatan Institute in Honduras.

Chemistry is an experimental discipline that uses applied principles and new skills to solve scientific problems. Through foundational courses and collaborative research with professors, students gain an understanding of chemical processes and acquire the tools to apply that knowledge in innovative ways. Faculty-mentored student projects emphasize modern techniques and instrumentation and use Colby’s research-grade facilities and laboratories. Recent research has included the synthesis of supramolecular structures, the detection of superoxide in natural water sources, and the molecular basis of cancer therapy.

As a Biology major at Whitman, you’ll study all forms of life, from the molecular to the ecological. You’ll do original research alongside amazing professors, and you’ll have lots of opportunities to put your knowledge to work outside the classroom. Students leave Whitman ready for advanced study in medicine, health, law, business and other biology-related fields. They also take jobs in teaching, the biotech industry, environmental work and more.

Biochemistry students at Macalester receive a broad, robust grounding in the molecular structures and chemical reactions of life by adding a Biochemistry Emphasis to a major in Biology or Chemistry. The Biochemistry Emphasis allows students to tailor their coursework to focus on a unique, cross-disciplinary perspective.

Welcome to the website for the Advanced Course in Immune, Infection and Tumour Biology, 30 Credits. The course comprises a basic subject orientation and also brings up safety aspects in laboratory work, and research-ethical issues. A large part of the course is laboratory work in an established research group in immunology, infection biology or tumour biology, and literature search in the subject area. The student should also participate in seminars on current research projects.

Distinguished by small class sizes and faculty lab instruction, our biology major offers you excellent preparation for medical school, graduate school and other professional programs. You will gain a solid grasp of core biological principles, cultivate analytical skills, and develop your curiosity about the biological world.

Biochemistry arose from biology and chemistry to investigate biological molecules and understand how their interactions result in living systems.

Biology is the study of living organisms and how they interact with each other and the environment they live in. During this course, you will study and learn about a wide range of biological concepts. In the first year, key areas you will cover include Biological Molecules, Enzymes, Health and Disease and Evolution. In the second year, your knowledge will further develop in areas including Respiration, Photosynthesis, Excretion and Genetics.

Biology is the scientific study of living organisms and their interactions with each other and their environment. It is a vast and diverse field that encompasses various sub-disciplines, ranging from molecular biology and genetics to ecology and evolutionary biology. Here are some key aspects and branches of biology: Cell Biology: Focuses on the structure, function, and behavior of cells, which are the basic units of life. Cell biologists study cellular processes such as cell division, metabolism, organelle function, and cellular signaling. Genetics: Examines heredity and genetic variation in organisms. Geneticists study genes, DNA, chromosomes, genetic mutations, inheritance patterns, gene expression, and genetic disorders. Advances in genetics have led to breakthroughs in fields like genetic engineering, gene therapy.
