The undergraduate major in applied mathematics consists of at least 40 credits of mathematics and statistics courses. The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to the Master of Arts (MA) and the Master of Science (thesis) (MS) degrees with a major in applied mathematics. Successful completion of the program will enhance the student's potential for a position in industry or government or for additional study. The program is flexible in order to meet the needs of students whose specializations may vary widely.

The applied mathematics interdisciplinary minor offers an introduction to the process of modeling natural or social phenomena by mathematical systems. The goal of the interdisciplinary minor is to foster skills in the development of an appropriate variety of mathematical tools, to acquire an appreciation for the limitations of a given mathematical model and for modeling as a dynamic process, and to experience this process within a specific domain of application. The interdisciplinary minor has two tracks, the natural science emphasis and the social science emphasis. Either track is open to all students, regardless of major.

The qualification aims to develop learner understanding and skills in the inter-related mathematical process skills of representing, analyzing, interpreting, using numbers, geometry, and statistics within functional contexts.

All levels will cover the basics of Mathematics: numbers, shape, space and measurements, and handling data. More advanced levels will also cover basic algebra. A basic maths qualification is an essential requirement for many jobs so will broaden your career prospects and benefit many entry level jobs, perhaps leading to office administration, retail or hospitality.
