Animal sciences offers a sound education in science and prepares students for scientific careers in animal agriculture. The animal scientist graduated from UFSC is prepared for a career in planning and technical management of animal production systems – with emphasis on processes aimed at obtaining quality products, with economic value added and market value, while respecting animal welfare and the environment. Graduates should be agents of development, entrepreneurs, generators and diffusers of technologies concerning the raising, improvement, management, nutrition, behavior, welfare and health prophylaxis of different species of livestock.

The Extended FdSc Animal Science with Management programme includes an introductory year with academic study modules plus a work experience element to help you develop strong vocational and general academic study skills alongside upskilling your current knowledge around animal sciences and specialist knowledge. This introductory year will get you ready for level 4 study with in the animal sector and is ideal for career changers, applicants who are just getting started in the animal sector or if applicants do not meet the entry requirements for the FdSc programme.

The FdSc Animal Science with Management programme will develop your practical skills and knowledge required to be successful in a range of animal management industries. Areas relating to management of animals, ecology, conservation, behaviour and training of animals will be covered as part of the FdSc in Animal Science with Management. There is an emphasis on developing a range of skills required in employment. This programme offers students the opportunity to study a range of animals, including livestock, equine, captive animals and domestic pets.

Animal Studies is an emerging field that builds on scholarship in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences to investigate past and present relations between human and non-human animals, the representation of those relations, their ethical implications and their social, political, and ecological effects in and on the world.

This course covers a wide range of animal related modules with a strong focus on the biology, health, welfare and husbandry of animals in the first year and a greater emphasis on wildlife and conservation in the second year. The Animal Management courses at Middlesbrough and Saltaire focuses on developing the knowledge, skills and experience required to work with a wide range of animals in the animal industry through both theory and practical teaching.

The FdSc Management of Animal Collections with Conservation programme covers the skills and knowledge that can be applied to a range of animal management industries, particularly in the areas of substantial and varied animal collections and zoos. A focus on the key aspect of species conservation, within a captive setting, promoting natural environments and behaviours to support conservation efforts. There is an emphasis on project work that concentrates on specific areas of individual interest. The college has developed a range of industry related resources to support the delivery of this foundation degree by a team of well-qualified staff. This programme offers students the opportunity to develop skills and enhance knowledge across a range of animal based industries including collections management, and wildlife conservation.

The FdSc Precision Livestock Farming is structured to provide you with a blend of the necessary technical, academic and management skills to work at the forefront of this increasingly innovative and technically focused part of the agricultural industry. The programme will develop your technical and management skills, in the areas of forage crop production, nutrition and genetics using the latest, machinery, data collection technology and software, while providing access to the latest production and livestock handling systems.
