The Center for Middle East and North Africa Studies (CMENAS) at Binghamton University coordinates the study of the Middle East, North and Sudanic Africa, and European countries that have extensive Islamic contact. The Intercollegiate Department of Africana Studies offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that centers and examines the African diaspora from a liberal arts perspective. Courses accommodate the needs of majors and nonmajors, providing significant preparation for careers in education, social work, public policy, law, medicine, business, international relations and advanced research.

As a field of inquiry, Africana studies describes and analyzes the origins and experiences of people of African descent wherever they live or have lived. The intellectual traditions inform this field of African American, African, and African Diasporic studies.

Black Studies is an interdisciplinary minor that invites students to explore the breadth of the field. Classes provide students with in-depth exposure to the historical, cultural, political, economic and social development of the African Diaspora. Through a variety of humanities and social sciences approaches, students will explore the history and foundation of Black Studies while also building the critical thinking skills to apply what they learn to topics in a variety of disciplines. A minor in Black Studies prepares students for a global future providing them with an understanding of a key demographic of the US and world.

Students majoring or minoring in the intercollegiate Africana Studies program explore Africa and the experiences of people of the African diaspora and heritage from the perspectives of anthropology, art history, history, literature, psychology, religious studies and other areas. You will be exposed to a broad range of research and teaching, and choose a concentration in the arts, humanities or social sciences. The rigor and scope of Africana Studies prepares students for careers in a variety of fields, including education, social work, public policy, law, medicine, business and international relations.
