The Cosmetology program is a sequence of courses that prepares students for careers in the field of cosmetology. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement.

Cosmetology is a personal service occupation. The Cosmetology program is designed to meet the standards established by the New Mexico State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists.

The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills.

The Cosmetology department offers two Certificates and an Associate in Applied Science degree program. There are two educational pathways in the Cosmetology program: Cosmetology and Cosmetology Instructor Training. The curriculum is designed to prepare the student for the State Board of Cosmetology Examination.

The Cosmetology program prepares students in all phases of Cosmetology. The program consists of 1600 hours of training in theoretical foundations, manipulative skills, business knowledge, professional and ethical practices and prepares students to take the Texas State Board of Cosmetology examination for licensure.

A graduate of Cosmetology is equipped with knowledge in the field of medical sciences, health and physical culture as well as specialist knowledge in the field of cosmetology. Using the knowledge of basic sciences, he understands physico-chemical and biological processes related to cosmetology.

The hands-on Cosmetology Instructor Certificate Program trains students to guide and inspire a new generation of cosmetologists. The degree builds on the Cosmetology Certificate Program. In one year, students with a cosmetology operator or esthetician license will discover how to teach effectively, plan lessons, assess learning, and prepare others for state testing and licensing. In addition to cosmetology instructor courses, the students will take freshman and sophomore-level general studies courses. Those who complete the A.A.S. degree and become a licensed cosmetology instructor will have more opportunities for employment and are qualified to teach at a high school or community college.

The Cosmetology Instructor Program prepares students for a career as a cosmetologist instructor working in the beauty industry.

SMC’s Cosmetology Department — an exciting place of color, shape, and beauty — offers the education students need to succeed in the cosmetology, skin care, and nail care industries. These well-established programs will prepare students for a career as a platform artist, educator, stylist, colorist, salon owner, sales representative, and makeup artist, as well as offer students the opportunity to work in the television and movie industries, or on cruise ships. This program prepares students to take the State board examination for a cosmetology license.
