We train engineers with advanced academic knowledge and the ability to carry out construction engineering. Focusing on the three fields of "building structure," "social infrastructure," and "planning/environment," a wide range of construction engineering, including advanced construction technology, national and regional utilization plans, urban development/maintenance planning, and disaster prevention / environmental conservation technology. Learn knowledge and skills, and cultivate an attitude of engaging in research on your own. We will foster engineers who can create safer and more comfortable living spaces and utilize the results in society.

This program is intended to help you learn the best-organized theories and practices of wooden architecture at the level of university education. This curriculum enables you to build wooden structures using traditional methods on your own by repeating the practical exercises of construction. The curriculum is appropriate for those who aspire to become general carpenters or special shrine and temple carpenters and those who hope to be involved in timber construction projects such as the preservation of cultural heritage. Our curriculum includes many subjects, such as Wooden Structure Framework Methods, Conservation and Restoration, Structural Design of Timber Structures, Wooden Structures, Integration and Practices, History of Japanese Architecture, and Timber Structure and Practices.

This field cultivates skillful engineers who have knowledge of plan, design, construction, and management of social infrastructures. To achieve the objective, this field seeks motivated, wide perspective and problem-solving oriented persons who are eager to learn the construction technology which supports manufacturing activities, who are interested in creating space for human living, and who consider harmony with nature.

The pillars are materials/structure, regional planning, and regional environment improvement. In the field of materials and structures, we will elucidate the ground characteristics and develop technologies related to structures in response to volcanic and earthquake disasters. In the field of regional planning, we will deal with depopulation and regional management issues in mountainous areas, public transportation issues associated with hollowing out of the city center and urban sprawl, and developing people-friendly areas with due consideration for the landscape. And consider the ideal way of planning. In the field of regional environment improvement, we handle technological development related to water environment improvement and air environment improvement with the aim of forming a recycling-oriented society. Each field promotes education and research in collaboration with other fields.

Through education and research in the fields of civil engineering planning, hydroengineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and structural engineering, we cultivate talent who can contribute to the building of a safe and secure society by planning, designing, implementing, maintaining, and managing social infrastructure facilities, while also considering the preservation of the natural environment. To this end, we welcome the following students. 1.Students who aim to play an active role in fields such as infrastructure planning and design as engineers specializing in civil engineering and the environment. 2.Students who have a deep interest in civil engineering and construction technology and aim to serve as engineers in construction companies or other related areas. 3.Students who aspire to work actively in a broad range of fields from the government to design consultancies and construction firms as civil engineers and environmental engineers.

The main research objectives of running the Special Course on Disaster Prevention Study for Asian Students are to understand and elucidate characteristic features of natural disasters in Asia and to develop their preventive measures, while the educational motto stands at producing first-class researchers and technical experts with frontier research capabilities and advanced knowledge in the field of natural disasters.

The research topics include the development of constitutive models for steel and concrete as construction materials; basic study on structural stability; study on deformational behaviors at the component and structural levels; study for the improvement of design methods employed for ensuring buckling stability; and the aesthetics of structures.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Program covers education and research related to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of structures; regional and urban planning; global and regional environmental problems; mitigation of disasters; etc. In addition to a solid background in engineering science, interdisciplinary knowledge of human science, social science, oceanography, and information science and technology is necessary for a civil engineer.
