Bachelor's degree

The aim of the bachelor program Computer Science is the education of graduates with a broad knowledge in two areas. The first area of gained expertise is applied computer science, in particular the ability to analyze and program real-world problems, which enables the graduates to get jobs in the industry directly after finishing their bachelor's degree. The second area is theoretical computer science (including a relatively broad mathematical foundation), which enables the graduates to continue their studies on a master (and later possibly also a doctoral) level. The coverage of both above-mentioned areas is in an accord with the position of computer science on the borderline between technical and natural sciences. The study program Computer Science has three specializations. One of them is more practically oriented (Databases and web) and two are more theoretically focused (General computer science, Artificial intelligence). The first year of study is common for all three specializations, which allows students to pick their specializations as late as in the second year of study when they have enough information for such a decision. An important part of the study program is creative work, which includes student theses. This type of work is aimed at software and specialized hardware development (in the applied area of computer science), and at scientific publications (in the theoretical area of computer science).

Charles University Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
PhD in Theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence
- Prague, Czech Republic
PhD
Full time
4 years
On-Campus, Blended
English
The program prepares experts for research and development in the areas of Theoretical Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Education is implemented by doing independent research under the supervision of senior experts. In addition to obtaining foundations in Computer Science, the students acquire deep knowledge in a chosen specialization area such as algorithms and data structures and their analysis, knowledge representation and reasoning, cognitive sciences and their applications, machine learning, multi-agent systems, problem modeling (e.g., in automated planning or decision making) and problem-solving using logical, probabilistic, and nature-inspired methods. Students learn how to formulate research goals, prepare a project proposal to achieve the set goals, and present the results in the international environment. Further, they gain experience teaching and mentoring students including thesis supervision.

On-Campus
English
The program consists of two closely related study tracks, Visual Computing, and Computer Game Development. Within the scope of Visual Computing, the program offers training in a wide range of visual sciences, including geometric modeling, rendering (image synthesis) as well as the basics of image analysis and computer vision. The Computer Game Development focuses - apart from computer graphics techniques - on artificial intelligence and intelligent agent systems as well as on software engineering skills necessary for the development of large-scale gaming projects. Both study tracks place emphasis on general programming skills, both at the system level closer to the hardware as well as on the higher level of modern programming languages.

Charles University Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
Master in Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence
- Prague, Czech Republic
MSc
Full time
2 years
On-Campus
English
The study program Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence provides education in the area of theoretical and applied knowledge for the design of intelligent systems in various areas including data analysis, automated problem solving, and robotic applications. An emphasis is put on a deep understanding of formal theoretical foundations and their practical applicability. Students will gain knowledge about the design of efficient data structures; about the formal modeling of problems using techniques of mathematical logic and probability theory; about algorithms (classical and nature-inspired) for problem-solving, the control of autonomous agents, machine learning, and data mining; and about complexity analysis of computational methods. Students will learn how to apply these techniques and how to extend them both to abstract (data) and physical (robotic) worlds in single-agent and multi-agent environments.
