The primary goal of the Special Education program is to develop self-confident, inquisitive, and thoughtful educators who are grounded in the breadth and depth of Learning Disabilities and Cognitive Impairments.

You will develop advanced knowledge and a critical understanding of intellectual disabilities and autism. Our degree programme in MSc Intellectual Disabilities and Autism has been designed to provide four distinct pathways for students who want to specialise in autism, intellectual disabilities, forensic issues and clinical practice.

The main purpose of the program is to train students on cutting-edge research skills in Cognitive Neurorehabilitation and with capabilities of coordinating relevant research in clinical settings. The program also aims to prepare students for postgraduate studies.

The Master of Science in Human Development and Early Childhood Disorders degree program is designed for students who want to work with infants and young children and their families in early childhood intervention programs and other professional settings, including schools, hospitals, and medical clinics.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 68 children has been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD is reported in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

The Bachelor of Science in Autism Behavioral Studies at Saint Joseph's University is designed to meet the growing need for qualified, professionally trained clinicians, educators and researchers.

Throughout this qualification, you will gain an understanding of the spectrum of autistic disorders and how they can affect people in a variety of ways, as well as exploring the importance of using a person-centred approach to provide support.

The Advanced Certificate Program in Autism consists of 12 credits (four 3-credit courses). The coursework and fieldwork opportunities will reflect a range of educational approaches and services available for persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The approach is eclectic and will include, but not be limited to, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), natural learning paradigms, relationship-based developmental models, and common practices of teaching in the field of ASD. Various philosophical, educational, psychological, and clinical paradigms will be incorporated. Throughout the curriculum, whenever appropriate, the counseling needs of families with individuals with ASD will also be addressed. We will also critically evaluate controversial popular but unproven alternative treatments. The curriculum will consist of lectures by faculty, readings of the professional literature, in-class discussions (with faculty and students), on-site observations, and fieldwork under close.

If you are interested in a career working specifically with young children with autism spectrum disorder and other special needs or with children who may be at risk for developmental delays, then this certificate is a great place to start.

Professionals with an Applied Behavior Analysis master’s degree work with people with autism to build skills and change socially significant behaviour, allowing them to live the most independent life possible.
