Contemporary issues of social, political, cultural, and community importance require American citizens equipped for civic engagement. Civic engagement may be measured by behaviors including voter turnout, volunteerism, community engagement, citizen advocacy, and holding an appointed or elected office. All American citizens have the right and responsibility to participate in the work of self-governance.

In a liberal arts context, we believe citizenship and scholarship are inextricably connected. This certificate program uses an intentionally interdisciplinary lens to make sense of social issues, and weaves applied scholarship, meaningful service, and collaborative leadership together to advance the well-being of communities near and far.

The concept of citizenship suggests an individual that is fully aware of their rights and responsibilities and who will play a co-operative, active and fulfilling role within the society in which they live.
