18 Chemistry Degree Programs

The Master’s Degree Program in Chemistry offered by the University of Parma provides comprehensive education and training focused on the most modern aspects of chemistry. The courses offered range from classic synthesis & catalysis to more challenging subjects such as environmental sustainability, molecular biology, advanced materials, and nanoscience.

Chemistry is the study of the properties, composition and chemical transformations of all material substances. It is often referred to as the central science since it draws from mathematics and physics and forms a necessary background to the understanding of earth science and all the biological disciplines, including the various medical professions. The Chemistry program at SJCC offers courses that satisfy general education requirements, allied-health science, engineers, chemistry, biology and physics majors.

Postgraduate study in Bioorganic Chemistry serves for the education of chemical experts with an emphasis on the structure and functions of small organic molecules in living organisms and on the possibility of influencing biological processes in these organisms through the action of such molecules. The program is thus directed towards the study of all aspects of organic compounds, which are indispensable for the structure and functioning of living organisms. The broad spectrum of these compounds includes molecules with a building (primary metabolites) function, signaling function, activating or deactivating function in relationship to strategic proteins within the living organisms, and also compounds, which are produced by these organisms (natural products, secondary metabolites, metabolites of xenobiotics). The study is founded on the structure and synthesis of organic compounds with a focus on natural products, heterocycles, and other organic compounds, which are capable of modulating biological processes. Elucidation of the function of such compounds as parts of biological structures as well as that of their influence on biological processes and the possibility to modify this influence through structural changes are no less important. Bioorganic Chemistry thus serves as a link between Organic Chemistry and biomedical disciplines and partially overlaps with Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry. Bioorganic Chemistry is, however, more general than the latter two programs, which are primarily focused on the study and development of drugs, ie. a more limited subgroup of biologically active compounds.

The chemistry major offers two programs of study: general chemistry and chemistry pre-medical. In choosing one program, students must consult with an appropriate program adviser early in their course of studies. An academic minor is not required, but may be taken as an option.

Launched in April 2020, the pro­fes­sio­nal Mas­ters pro­gram M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry pro­vi­des ex­pert in­ter­di­sci­pli­na­ry trai­ning in sustainable che­mis­try. Our uni­que cur­ri­cu­lum teaches – from the mole­cu­lar le­vel to glo­bal pro­duct flows, sustaina­bi­li­ty as­sess­ment and al­ter­na­ti­ve busi­ness mo­dels for che­mi­cal pro­ducts – how to un­der­stand and ap­p­ly chemistry in the context of sustainability.

The aim of the proposed graduate research program Environmental Analytical Chemistry and Microbiology (EACM) is to form experts with up-to-date knowledge of advanced analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, molecular biology, and environmental microbiology to elucidate the behavior and fate of contaminants from pollution sources to living organisms, to assess their impacts on ecosystem structure and functioning, and to implement solutions to maintain ecosystems health.

The goal of the doctoral study program Didactics of Chemistry is to prepare specialists to improve the quality of chemical education in the Czech Republic in accordance with current social needs and in accordance with the educational programs of advanced European countries based on scientific research results. The doctoral program is focused on the preparation of specialists in the field of chemical education theory in accordance with current knowledge of chemistry, pedagogy, psychology, sociology, informatics, and other disciplines. The program is based on an interdisciplinary education at the interface of physics, chemistry, and biology from the physical point of view and is focused on physical experimental and theoretical approaches. The program prepares experts for independent scientific work in solving tasks of basic and applied research in the interdisciplinary fields between physics, chemistry, and, according to the theme of dissertation work, biology.

Emerging policy frameworks all over the globe are setting ambitious goals for conducting value creation within the safe operating space of the planetary boundaries and the Agenda 2030. All sectors of the economy, from agriculture, housing, healthcare, mobility, and energy to the IT sector, depend on the use of chemical products and are facing an imminent necessity to change gear in response to climate change, pollution, and resource depletion.

Students in this Adolescence Education,Chemistry earn degrees in both Biological Sciences and Adolescence Education.Candidates successfully completing this program of study are recommended by SUNY Old Westbury to New York State for initial certification as Adolescence Education (grades 7-12) teachers.
