Exceptional career opportunities for teachers and associate teachers in bilingual/bicultural early childhood settings are increasing with the state’s growing diversity. This certificate can be earned concurrently with the Early Childhood Education certificate. See Department Chair for details. The Early Childhood Education Program at Santa Barbara City College centers around the continuing experience of supervised teaching, combined with intensive classroom instruction. Basic principles of early childhood education, including curriculum for preschools, school age programs and care-giving for infant centers, are introduced. In-depth study of observation, assessment, health, safety and nutrition are also introduced.

The Certificate of Achievement-Advanced is an interdisciplinary program that provide both focused study of one or more ethnic groups and coursework that examines the social constructs and dynamics that govern our interactions with others. Students pursuing the Certificate of Achievement-Advanced in Intercultural Studies gain the knowledge and skills necessary for increasing their cultural sensitivity, cultural competence and social equity. This program enables them to work with confidence and increased effectiveness in a wide variety of international and multicultural settings.

Indigenous studies is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that seeks to understand the ways in which indigenous peoples worldwide, despite their incredible diversity, share a common experience of colonization. Indigenous studies is thus interested in historical contexts, political struggles, cultural expressions, and the lived ongoing effects of colonialism.

This course will provide a cross-cultural exploration of human cultures in the world. This will include an examination of the diversity of economic systems, social structures, kinship patterns, and political and religious systems. Students will apply anthropological analysis to selected cultural studies in Canada and the world.

This program was created to provide an academic base for those students interested in future service in a different culture. Students will gain knowledge of diverse cultures and peoples, an understanding of overseas missions and development, and language learning skills. The program will culminate in a short-term trip overseas, providing a first-hand cross-cultural experience. The Cross-Cultural Certificate is normally taken concurrently with a baccalaureate degree at Crandall University.

In addition to examining the experiences of marginalized communities in the U.S. and beyond, students explore race and ethnicity as active social, political, historical, and cultural processes and use race and ethnicity as categories of analysis across time and space.

This course offers an introduction to the practice of cultural resource management in British Columbia. Major topics include: the nature of cultural resources in B.C., potential threats to those resources, the legislation protecting heritage sites in B.C. and the role of the B.C. Archaeology Branch in coordinating conservation efforts. The course also examines the ethics of archaeology and the steps that are being taken towards a greater participation of First Nations in the management and interpretation of heritage resources in B.C

The Certificate in Navajo Cultural Arts will enhance and revitalize authentic practices and provide opportunities for Navajo master artisans and “knowledge holders” to share their unique skills with the emerging young generation of artists (participants will be selected on a cohort basis).

The dissemination of culture contributes to the cultural development and the integral formation of the student and academic community, as well as of the society in general through dialogue, rescue, preservation, propagation, and enrichment of culture in all its expressions and possibilities, including the manifestations of art, science, humanities and gregarious values. The Association promotes these activities through the planning, organization, and implementation of institutional programs and actions with a full sense of equity, relevance, and quality. The areas of activity that include the dissemination of culture are artistic production and dissemination; popularization of the humanities, science, and technology; development and use of communication and information media (television, video, internet, satellite reception, radio broadcasting, and editing of digitized documents); editorial work and the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. Cultural dissemination activities project the contents and results of the academic work carried out as well as an expression of culture in the institution or its environment. The program introduces students to all aspects of museum studies from theoretical perspectives to practical applications.

With a global and comparative perspective the course will study a variety of customs and beliefs of indigenous people. Specific topics will include rituals, kinship, politics, economics, mythology, art and religion.

The Cornerstone one year program, provides training for students who prepare for cross-cultural support ministries, short-term cross-cultural ministry and for those who for other reasons have limited time for training.

The certificate in African American studies introduces undergraduate students to the interdisciplinary study of African American, African diaspora and African history, society, and culture. Students may choose courses in African American history, literature, black women’s studies, art history, visual culture, music history, and sociology. The certificate offers students opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary study and practice that will complement their major and enhance their intellectual and creative participation in their chosen professions and as citizens in our global society.
