18 Corrections Certificate Programs

This certificate in Corrections provides students with the knowledge and exposure to the legal considerations and best practices of correctional administration while also preparing students for the fundamental professional principles within the field of corrections. Students pursuing this certificate will be introduced and exposed to the history of correctional systems in the United States along with the current system and the needs of the future within community corrections. Students will learn and demonstrate proficiency in the legal aspects of the correctional system and obtain the working knowledge required of professionals looking for entry-level positions within the corrections field.

Rutgers Law School is pleased to offer students the opportunity to participate in a new Certificate Program in Criminal Law and Procedure.

This course is intended to provide correctional staff with an overview of the roles and responsibilities of a probation officer. Fundamental philosophies and policies of the BC Corrections Branch, in relation to the duties and responsibilities of a probation officer will also be looked at while working as agents of change. The learner will acquire the basic skills to perform core duties, including an initial intake on both bail and sentenced clients. The learner will also understand the administration of court orders including submitting breaches and applying for court order variations. Focus will be placed on learning the operational requirements needed to complete the most basic duties of a probation officer.

This course builds on the learning material from Assessment & Planning while still introducing new material for Probation Officer 14's. Areas to be covered include Conditional Sentence Order {CSO) management, introduction to Substance Use Resources and Education (SU RE), and Interventions Tool Kit {ITK).

This course is intended to build on the basic skills of a probation officer covered in Fundamentals. In this part of the training, the learner will be introduced to relationship violence (K-file) and sexual offences (SO). The learner will use the supervision framework introduced in Fundamentals, and will incorporate additional necessary steps for supervision of these types of files. The learner will also be introduced to effective case management for women in the criminal justice system, community risk-needs assessment tool (CRNA), spousal assault risk assessment (SARA), community work service, alternative measures, and electronic supervision

This course builds on the material learned in CORR-1073 Adult Probation Assessment & Planning (PO) Part 1. The learner will apply the concepts learned using scenarios and role-plays and will receive peer and instructor feedback. Content will include relationship violence (K-file) and sexual offences (SO). The learner will also integrate effective case management for women, apply the community risk needs assessment tool (CRNA) and spousal assault risk assessment (SARA). Community work service, alternative measures, and electronic supervision will also be discussed in this in-person course.

This course builds on the material learned in CORR-1071 Adult Probation Assessment & Planning (P014) Part 2 by applying the concepts and skills learned in a community office under the supervision of a senior probation officer, local manager, or designate. The learner will practice the basic skills required to supervise bail clients with relationship violence (K-file) offences and sexual offences (SO). The learner will also apply the community risk needs assessment tool (CRNA) on a sentenced client. Community work service, alternative measures, and electronic supervision are also covered in this course. Focus will be placed on the application of skills learned.

This course builds on the learning material from Assessment & Planning, while introducing new material for Probation Officers. Pre-Sentence Reports (PSR's) and sentencing considerations for Indigenous clients will also be covered.

This course builds on the material learned in CORR-1074 Adult Probation Assessment & Planning (PO) Part 2 by applying the concepts and skills lea rned in a community office under the supervision of a senior probation officer, local manager, or designate. The learner will practice the basic skills required to supervise clients with relationship violence (K-file) offences and sexual offences (SO). The lea rner will also apply the community risk needs assessment tool (CRNA) and the spousa l assault risk assessment (SARA) on a sentenced client. Community work service, alternative measures, and electronic supervision are also covered in this co urse. Focus will be placed on the application of skills learned.

This course builds on the material learned in CORR-1083: Adult Probation Responsivity & Change (PO} Part 1. The learner will apply the concepts learned using scenarios and role-plays and will receive peer and instructor feedback. Areas to be covered include Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) management, utilization and application of interventions using the risk needs responsivity principle, Substance Use Resources and Education (SURE}, Interventions Tool Kit (ITK}, and Core Programming. Pre-Sentence Reports (PSR's} and Sentencing Considerations for Indigenous Clients will also be covered.

This course builds on the material learned in CORR-1060. The learner will further their knowledge and skills of the roles and responsibilities of a probation officer by applying the concepts learned in CORR- 1060 Adult Probation Fundamentals Part 1, using scenarios and role-plays (related to probation officer work) and receiving peer and instructor feedback. The learner will observe and role-play the basic skills to perform core duties, including an initial intake on both bail and sentenced clients. The learner will also practice submitting breaches and applying for order variations. Attending court will be discussed and role played in this course. Focus will be placed on the application of skills needed to complete the most basic duties of a probation officer.

This course builds on the material from CORR-1060 Adult Probation Fundamentals Part 1 and CORR- 1061 Adult Probation Fundamentals Part 2 by applying the concepts and skills learned. This training involves practicum assignments completed in a community office under the supervision of a senior probation officer, local manager, or designate. The learner will perform core duties, including an initial intake on both bail and sentenced clients, proper file set-up, and completion of a bail supervision plan. The learner will also demonstrate basic administration of court orders, including submitting breaches and applying for court order variations. The learner will identify community resources in their catchment area and establish an updated resource list for future use. Focus will be placed on the application of skills learned.

This course builds on the material learned in CORR-1081: Adult Probation Responsivity & Change (P014)Part 2 by applying the concepts and skills learned in a community office under the supervision of a Senior Probation Officer, Local Manager, or designate. This course involves an assignment to observe a core program. If Core Programs are not scheduled during the practicum period, the alternative option is to interview a Core Programs facilitator.
