The American Indian Studies Certificate program at Itasca is designed for students interested in developing a career or learning more about the indigenous people of North America.

The Department of British and American Studies is comprised of three courses: the British and American Studies Course, where students learn about the cultures, literature, societies, and other features of the English cultural area; the English Communication Course focused on improving communication skills; and the English Education Course, which cultivates comprehensive human abilities to develop specialists in English-language education. This department’s educational philosophy is a thorough dedication to world-class English-language education, liberal arts education, communication education, and human education. According to their interests, students can choose from these courses that share the department’s common goal of further improving the four language competencies (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) at an advanced level.

American Indian Studies incorporates a blend of courses covering anthropology, history, literature, language and sociology all focused on the experiences, culture and languages of the native peoples of the Americas. We are the only UW campus to offer three full years of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) language.

African American and Africana Studies (AAAS) minor is an interdisciplinary program that offers an introduction to the study of African intellectual heritage locally and globally. The AAAS minor and emphasis focus on the global links across the African diaspora and examines the contributions of the African intellectual heritage as key components of American culture. Classes engage the entire African diaspora, including the study of Africa, African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Asian, African American, and mixed-race cultures. Because it is an interdisciplinary program, students pursuing African American and Africana Studies take courses in religion, English literature, English rhetoric, history, sociology, anthropology, political science, women and gender studies, modern languages, education and more. With its emphasis on interdisciplinary study, AAAS minor encourages students to conduct research across disciplinary and departmental boundaries. AAAS provides academic and career advising, research training, leadership skills development, peer mentoring and local/global community learning opportunities and engagement, including study abroad for students. Students who take advantage of these opportunities gain the skills and abilities to be effective leaders and responsible citizens in an increasingly culturally and ethnically diverse society.

IAIA offers one of the only Native American Art History certificate programs in the nation.

This minor is designed for students intending to pursue a secondary education teaching license. Students may qualify for licensure if they complete all of the following: a major in an approved content area, the American Government as a Second Teaching Field minor, the Education minor, and the fifth-year student teaching experience.

This course is about the anthropology of art with special focus on the indigenous arts of North America, Oceania and Africa. Specific topics include the identification of the art, its uses, and the cultures of its producers.
