African American Studies examines the historical, cultural, political, economic, and social development of people of African descent. We focus on African America as part of the African Diaspora. We situate the specific forms of expression and resistance from people of African descent in North America in the context of a wider Black world, including societies in the Caribbean, South America, and Central America. African American studies is particularly strong in comparative analysis. It is an in-depth, comparative, and multidisciplinary major.

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry at the University of California, Riverside. We are dedicated to perform cutting-edge research in biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as to strive towards excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. Our faculty pursue research areas spanning structural biology, genomics, stem cell and developmental biology, biophysics, cancer biology, and plant biology. The department has substantial strength in areas of transcriptional/translational control, epigenetic regulation, RNA biology, chromatin biology, genetic engineering, enzymology, genome stability, and environmental stress responses, providing our graduate students ample opportunities to pursue their research interests.

The Art Department at UC Riverside offers a range of courses for the undergraduate student who is interested in active participation in a world where communication is increasingly visual. The curriculum provides a broad-based engagement with creativity and innovation through experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to visual manifestations of ideas and self-expression. Instruction is non-vocational and follows the goals of critical thinking and exploration appropriate to the research institution of the University of California through courses covering a variety of contemporary art practices including painting, sculpture, photography, video and digital media. The program does not provide training in task-specific commercial arts as one would find at a trade school and is most appropriate to students who have a deep interest and commitment to the visual arts. However, in a world where the venues of visual expression and communication are growing exponentially, creativity and skills of visual articulation can have significant vocational value in a range of applications. Choosing a major in the Art Department at UCR, students will find a faculty of successful and dedicated working artists with international reputations and deep commitment to education, excellent technical facilities, and a welcoming community of like-minded individuals.

Actuarial science is a discipline that assesses financial risks in the fields of finance and insurance, using mathematical and statistical methods. Actuarial science applies the mathematics of probability and statistics to define, analyze, and solve the financial implications of uncertain future events. Actuaries measure and manage risk and have a deep understanding of mathematics, statistics and business management. Professionals in this area help businesses grow, manage risks, and provide value to their customers. They help leaders make strategic decisions and consumers prepare for their future.

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering along with considerable training in fundamental and applied science, undergraduate students majoring in Chemical Engineering learn how modern chemical engineering processes work and how they are used to produce today’s products. Students are prepared for entry into careers in a wide range of chemical engineering fields including petrochemical and petroleum refining, renewable energy, bioengineering, semiconductor manufacturing, and food processing. This comprehensive training also prepares students to pursue graduate education and research in chemical engineering at major research universities, or professional studies such as medicine or law.

Businesses now have data available to them at a scale that is historically unprecedented; harnessing this data for insight on what customers want provides them with a competitive advantage. Traditional companies (Ford, Walmart, General Electric, etc.) today pride themselves as being transformed to big-data businesses. Furthermore, data permeates all aspects of science, engineering, and other academic disciplines.

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences currently offers three undergraduate degree programs: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Geology, Earth Sciences, and Geophysics. In addition, we offer Minor options in Geology, Geophysics and Global Climate Change.

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (EE) program prepares students with an education in three areas - foundational sciences, primary focus areas, and technical electives. Students in the program receive a well-balanced perspective of the world’s challenges and industry’s role in contributing to advancements while gaining experience in their preferred area of technical focus.

Physicists study the fundamental nature of the universe, ranging from the vastness of space to the smallest of subatomic particles. They develop new technologies, methods, and theories based on the results of their research to deepen our understanding of how things work and contribute to innovative, real-world applications.

Bachelor of Science in Anthropology ecome an expert in human connections, Your anthropology studies will prepare you for working in an intersectional world. Not only will you hone your analysis, critical thinking, and communication skills— you’ll also hone your ability to understand humanity and all of its complexity (including the impact of cultural dynamics on interpersonal communication and the social structures that affect our lives).

Both programs are based on the conviction that broad undergraduate training in biology and the physical sciences, together with study in the humanities and social sciences, are fundamental to the education of a biologist. In addition to English composition, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, chemistry, and physics, both degrees require introductory biology courses (BIOL 005A, BIOL05LA, BIOL 005B, and BIOL 005C) and 36 units of upper-division (numbered 100-199) biology courses. The degrees differ only in that 16 units of a foreign language are required for the B.A., whereas the B.S. requires 16 additional units in substantive courses in biology or in related fields.

Chemistry, the study of matter and its changes, is typically divided into analytical, environmental, inorganic, materials, organic, and physical. The Department of Chemistry offers a B.S. degree in Chemistry. In addition to the standard B.S. degree, students can choose options in Chemical Physics and in Environmental Chemistry. Students following these curricula meet the requirements for certification by the American Chemical Society. The department also offers a B.A. degree, with less emphasis on Chemistry courses and reduced Physics and Math requirements. Students have increased ease in meeting requirements for such areas as premedical, predental, or prepharmaceutical science; education; and administration.

The Dance major is distinctive for its outstanding faculty of nationally and internationally recognized artists and scholars who draw from a variety of creative and academic backgrounds, including dance making, choreography, visual art, creative writing, literature, African diasporic ritual cultures, Hip Hop and streetdance, Indian diasporic dance, Indigenous studies, digital technologies, performance studies, queer studies, and cultural studies.

Economics is a social science that studies the efficient allocation of scarce resources to the activities carried out by consumers, businesses, governments, and nations. Modern economics is a quantitative science and its analysis requires a solid foundation in mathematics and statistical analysis. Students majoring in economics go on to careers in business, law, public policy, government institutions, and international relations. Training in economics provides substantive knowledge for advanced degrees such as masters in business administration and law, and Ph.D. degree in economics.
