A Bachelor of Science in Philosophy is an undergraduate academic degree that focuses on the study of philosophy from a scientific and analytical perspective. While the majority of philosophy degrees are Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs, some institutions offer a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) option for students who wish to approach philosophy with a more quantitative or scientific emphasis.

The Women’s Studies minor at Converse features an introductory course designed by a team of seventeen Converse professors from fields as diverse as history, physics, literature, religion, philosophy, psychology, art, and biology.

Studying philosophy enhances your ability to think clearly, a gift that can be applied to any line of work. A program that focuses on ideas and their logical structure, including arguments and investigations about abstract and real phenomena. Includes instruction in logic, ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, metaphysics, symbolism, and history of philosophy, and applications to the theoretical foundations and methods of other disciplines. Studying philosophy exposes you to traditional issues that emerge from concerns shared by all humans; develops analytic and evaluative skills; encourages critical understanding of yourself and others; fosters independent and enduring contemplation of fundamental questions; and reveals the practical value of philosophical reasoning, including its role in exercising and improving mental powers and in enhancing human flourishing.

The Department of philosophy offers students an approach to philosophical thinking that is both historical and critical and allows students to become acquainted with the fundamental ideas and arguments of philosophers that have importantly shaped and challenged Western and non-Western civilizations.

Whether we realize it or not, we ask ourselves philosophical questions all the time: What should I be doing with my life? What is the ethical thing to do in this situation? Is it reasonable to believe in God? Studying philosophy helps you clearly formulate questions like these, examine assumptions logically, think critically, propose reasoned answers, and defend your position—a skillset that translates to many diverse professions for our graduates, including business, journalism, law, military intelligence, social work, and applied ethics in business, the environment, medicine, and more.

Majors complete a departmental concentration concurrently with the core and area courses.

If students complete all Phase 2 experience requirements and hours by the end of CLNC 2030, they may replace CLNC 2040 with an elective of equal credits. CLNC 2010-2030must be taken by all students. If students complete all clinical experience requirements and hours by the end of CLNC 3040, they may replace CLNC 3060 with equal credit. Students who plan to drop CLNC 3060 must submit all final clinical paperwork (including NARM application documents, form 200, 204, and the 5 MEAC COC forms) at the end of CLNC 3040. CLNC 3010-3040 must be taken by all students. Due to the clinical hours’requirement, students cannot concurrently enroll in more than clinical practicum classes in one trimester. If this policy creates a substantial hardship for a student, the student can submit an exemption to this for review and approval by the Clinical Department Chair and the Registrar.

Converse’s Music Therapy degree program blends music, psychology, and neuroscience to support an individual’s physical, emotional, cognitive and social development. Music therapists work with clients of all ages from newborns to older adults using music to help them achieve therapeutic goals.
