The Physics Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown offers both a bachelor of science in natural sciences with a concentration in physics and a minor in physics. Students who wish to relocate to the Pittsburgh-Oakland campus to earn a BS in physics may complete their introductory, elective, and laboratory courses in physics on the Johnstown campus.

The Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences focuses on utilizing scientific knowledge to better understand living organisms and the wonders of God’s world, providing a rigorous curriculum and strong foundation in core biology courses such as general biology, microbiology, and cell biology. Additional course requirements provide a foundation in related fields (chemistry, physics, and mathematics), and provide breadth to the study of biology.

Physics is essential to understanding our modern technological society and is the foundation for all the natural sciences. The problem-solving skills learned in physics can be applied everywhere on scales from subatomic particles to the entire universe. Applied Mathematics is a rigorous math program focusing on the theory and application of mathematics to other disciplines such as engineering and the sciences. Mathematics is applied to solve problems such as underground water pollution, traffic jams, inflation, unemployment, and climate change.

The mathematical sciences degree curriculum is designed primarily for dual majors in biology, chemistry, physics, or an engineering discipline. During the first two years of study, students in this program take the same courses as those students getting an applied mathematics degree, followed by upper-division mathematics courses (such as numerical analysis and modeling) in the final two years. Students also take electives in social science, computer science, and engineering.

This concentration is intended for students that want to pursue a career that focuses on Ecology, Environmental Sciences, and Evolutionary Biology fields. The overall educational objective of the biological sciences undergraduate program is to provide students with a conceptual foundation in biology and a skills base necessary to build successful careers in industry or business or to succeed in graduate school or professional school.

In pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, students receive a strong foundation in analytical, physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry before selecting one of three options leading to the degree: biochemistry and natural products, environmental chemistry, or natural and synthetic polymer chemistry.
