Applied Mathematics is a rigorous math program focusing on the theory and application of mathematics to other disciplines such as engineering and the sciences. Mathematics is applied to solve problems such as underground water pollution, traffic jams, inflation, unemployment, and climate change.

This concentration prepares students for a variety of careers in the mathematical sciences as well as for graduate work in mathematics. Pure math students have also been successful with graduate studies in other fields including computer science, economics, engineering, law, medicine, and business.

The mathematical sciences degree curriculum is designed primarily for dual majors in biology, chemistry, physics, or an engineering discipline. During the first two years of study, students in this program take the same courses as those students getting an applied mathematics degree, followed by upper-division mathematics courses (such as numerical analysis and modeling) in the final two years. Students also take electives in social science, computer science, and engineering.

The Mathematics Education Concentration strives to produce mathematics educators who are innovators and leaders in the teaching field as well as capable mathematicians. A year-long student teaching experience is included in the curriculum, and upon graduation, students have a B.S. in Mathematics and are certified to teach mathematics in grades 6-12 in Louisiana public schools.

Earn your BS through a strong and flexible program in both applied and theoretical mathematics. BS majors will choose to concentrate on traditional pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or in training for a career in actuarial mathematics. Our General Math and Pre-Actuarial options were intended to prepare our graduates for careers in industry or for further study in graduate school. The engineering field is becoming even more dependent on mathematics. Currently, most of our Pre-Engineering majors stay at Siena Heights as Math majors.

The applied mathematics major allows students to choose either the standard track or one of three concentrations: Actuarial Science Concentration, Computer Science Concentration, Physics Concentration, or Statistics and Data Science Concentration.
