The education and research fields in the Chemistry Course consist of four major fields in modern chemistry: physical chemistry of condensed matter, chemistry for molecular design, functional chemistry in life science, and functional chemistry for materials. The Chemistry Course provides a fully comprehensive curriculum involving four fields in modern chemistry, from which the students can take the classes for four years. Each senior belongs to a research laboratory in our chemistry course to engage in the graduation research for a whole year, with receiving detailed instruction from the faculty staff in the laboratory. Each research laboratory is equipped with the necessary experimental apparatuses: the X-ray diffractometer, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, and mass spectrometers.

Explaining the phenomena of life at the molecular level in the organisms that form ecosystems The Earth is home to a vast variety of living organisms, which comprise rich ecosystems that exist in harmony with the environment. The Environmental Biology Course conducts research with the goal of understanding how organisms recognize the environment in ecosystems and harmonize their activities using the language of molecules. For example, the course covers research into the mechanisms by which animals recognize and respond to external stimuli such as light, and research into the effects of endocrine disruptors flowing into rivers, lakes, and marshes on fish and other wildlife and the mechanisms by which those effects are carried out. Other projects in which department are enthusiastically involved include research into the mechanisms of plant environmental recognition and plant immunity to pathogenic bacteria, research into the physiological mechanisms of microorganisms and the control of their lifespans, and research into the various physiologically active substances that are created by organisms in the environment. We consider research in areas such as these to provide a basis for maintaining ecosystems that are rich in life into the indefinite future.

Mathematics is both old and new. Traditionally, research in mathematics is the study of numbers and spaces: numbers such as the natural numbers 1, 2, 3, etc that everyone is familiar with, and spaces such as the 3-dimensional space that we see around us. From a modern viewpoint, one can argue that mathematics is still about numbers and spaces, but then one would have to widen the interpretation of "numbers" and "spaces" to include the great variety of forms that numbers and spaces have recently evolved into. This is what mathematical research has become.

Chemistry explores the structures, properties, interactions, and transformation of materials. In recent years, chemistry has evolved to incorporate various areas of science, and its target materials have expanded from conventional substances to those relating to the ocean, the atmosphere, and the cosmos.

Since we are dealing with a wide variety of natural phenomena from the core of the earth to the edge of the solar system, we want our students not only to acquire the wide knowledge and skills related to planetology, but also to develop broad viewpoints, creativity, and originality, allowing them to think outside the existing frameworks.
