The Film Studies minor considers a variety of approaches to understanding the role of film in all its different forms and intents. A film may have predominantly literary content or may be specifically engaged with historical, political, or cultural concerns. It may also be primarily an abstract, aesthetic work, exploring alternatives to traditional narrative filmmaking. It is fundamentally a medium used to examine and study human knowledge and exploration. It is tightly interwoven into cultural identity throughout the world.

If your dream is to make films, shoot commercials, plan a documentary or direct a live television show, this program is for you. With courses in lighting, editing, directing, audio and videography, the New England School of Communications (NESCom) video/film production program prepares students to step into the workforce with hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment. With hundreds of years of collective industry experience, our faculty work to help you develop expertise and creativity as you master the professional production, knowledge and skills employers demand. As part of their studies, students participate in live news and sports television broadcasts, film productions and group projects. Unlike other programs, NESCom video/film production students begin working with equipment in their first year.

As a student, you’ll be exposed to every stage of film production through a theoretical and gear-centric curriculum. Our Bachelor of Science in Film Production Degree with a concentration in Directing is 120 credit hours and 36 months in length.

The Bachelor of Science in Film program is designed to provide students with not only knowledge and understanding of film theory, but also hands-on experience in the skills and craft needed to qualify for entry-level industry positions. Graduates are trained to work as independent filmmakers, production assistants, editors, sound designers, assistant directors, unit production managers, art directors, video editors, lighting technicians, director’s assistants, dialogue editors and a variety of other positions in the film and video industry.

If you have a passion for filmmaking, Full Sail’s Film bachelor’s program provides you with a comprehensive overview of the industry – while allowing you to discover your unique place within it. You’ll start by sampling the varied skills and technologies a professional film studio has to offer – from writing to set decoration and makeup. The Bachelor of Science in film & television equips students to work in various positions within the creative and production teams of film and television. With a strong focus on storytelling, students will learn how to convey their thoughts and ideas in ways that connect with an audience. They will also learn from experienced professors how to take creative ideas and make them flourish.

Students wishing to major in film, television, and digital media must complete the following requirements for graduation: A minimum of 124 semester hours overall, including at least 42 hours earned at the 30000 levels or above TCU Core Curriculum requirements A minimum of 37 semester hours in the FTDM major courses, including at least 12 hours at the 30000 level or above A minor of at least 18 hours; all requirements of the minor department must be followed A grade of “C” or better in all courses taken in the FTDM department FTDM 10113 History of Broadcasting; FTDM 10123 History of Film; FTDM 10143 Introduction to Film and Television Aesthetics; FTDM 20213 Basic Video Production; FTDM 20523 Business of Media; FTDM 30103 Media Analysis; FTDM 40901 Senior Seminar.

This major allows students to learn the skills necessary to write, produce and distribute media messages via television and film. There are many opportunities for hands-on learning with courses in multi-camera, field and post-production, both inside the studio and on location. Upper-level students participate in a video drama production capstone project, while television studio majors produce a season’s worth of news and talk/variety shows.
