Pitt-Johnstown offers a bachelor of science degree in energy and earth resources with concentrations in energy resource geology and environmental geology. The University also offers a minor in geology and collaborates with the Education Division to offer a bachelor of science in secondary education – earth and space science.

If so, a major in Earth and Environmental Sciences could be right for you! Earth and Environmental Sciences provides an overview of how science affects our environment, focusing on interactions between the solid Earth, its water, its air, and its living organisms, and on dynamic, interdependent relationships between these four components.

The most pressing problems of the 21st century include environmental degradation such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, and air pollution, and increasing resource scarcity urging for a more sustainable use of Earth’s resources. The BSc program Earth Sciences and Sustainable Management of Environmental Resources (ESSMER) is an interdisciplinary science major with a strong focus on phenomena and processes occurring at the Earth’s surface. Our students develop a holistic understanding of the system Earth, anthropogenic interaction with its land, atmosphere, oceans and biosphere, and management of environmental resources, including water, soils, biological and energy resources, and minerals. The ESSMER program is based on a solid foundation in science disciplines and uses key methodological tools and concepts from Earth Sciences and data management combined with the concepts of sustainability and resource management.

The program in BSc in Earth Sciences provides a general bachelor-level education in earth sciences and also offers the possibility to specialize in Geology. It includes introductory modules in Nature sciences, Geology, and also to Geography. The core of the program is based on the fundamental issues of earth sciences and includes topics in Astronomy, Cartography, Geomorphology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Hydrology, Meteorology, Palaeontology, Paleoclimatology, Remote sensing, Stratigraphy, etc. while a strong regional geographical aspect is also present. The program includes a limited variety of human geographical courses too.

This rigorous science degree prepares students for careers with geotechnical, environmental, geophysics, and energy and mineral resource companies. This degree program is an outstanding pathway for a career in Earth Science research with companies, government agencies, or at universities. In this specialist route available in our BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (Q64), you’ll learn why volcanoes occur, what fossils indicate about past environments, how the oceans regulate climate and why sea-level changes. As well as gaining an understanding of earth sciences, you’ll develop analytical and problem-solving skills.

Environmental science explores the complexities of the natural environment and our relationship with it. This specialist route, available in our BSc (Honours) Natural Sciences (Q64), takes a holistic approach to the science of our environment investigating topics such as global warming, water resources, pollution and conservation. Our environment is fascinating – but it’s under threat from climate change, biodiversity loss and resource depletion. Explore the consequences and implications of environmental change for sustainability from a scientific perspective, by learning about the processes, links and interactions operating in different environments.

The B.Sc. Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is offered on McGill University's Macdonald Campus. Students can also explore courses and other opportunities on the Downtown Campus, and pursue field courses and research activities locally and around the world, including field study semesters in Panama, Barbados, and Africa. Students can customize their learning experience by picking one of five different majors (Major in Agricultural Economics, Major in Environmental Biology, Major in Environment, Major in Life Sciences, Major in Sustainable Agricultural Systems) along with multiple specializations, concentrations, and/or minors.

This BSc (Honours) in Geography and Environmental Science degree will help you understand and consider responses to urgent environmental challenges, including climate change, globalisation, development, biodiversity loss, migration and urbanisation. It takes a holistic approach, combining geography and environmental science.

The study programme of Chemical Engineering (Environment and Energy) aims to train bachelors with interdisciplinary academic education that can serve as a basis for the further development of their intellectual capacity and scientific approach to the solution of complex problems arising in contemporary chemical engineering and the related engineering fields. The specialists are able to analyse and develop chemical and technological processes, to develop new products, and to choose the equipment in a comprehensive way, given technological and social, economic, and environmental aspects. The graduates shall be flexible and able to adapt to the fast changing chemical industry and to evaluate and choose solutions; on the basis of their theoretical knowledge and practical skills, they shall be able both to organise conventional technological processes and to make decisions that require new knowledge. They shall be motivated to continuously update their knowledge and practical skills. The objectives for the programme are that graduates of the department will obtain employment or attend graduate school, will advance in their chosen careers, and will be productive and fulfilled professionals throughout their careers.
