The purpose of the DTech in Biotechnology is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of Biotechnology.

The central purpose of the Diploma (Extended) in Biotechnology is to develop graduates who can demonstrate focused knowledge and skills in Biotechnology. The program, therefore, focuses centrally on equipping students with an in-depth and specialized knowledge of the general principles and practical skills applicable to the Biotechnology industry.

The BSc (Biotechnology) program is an interdepartmental program with a particular emphasis on molecular biology, which is aimed at empowering students to pursue their interest in biotechnology. Undergraduate training includes exposure to aspects of biochemistry, genetics and microbiology, in addition to the other subjects of a student’s choice. Students are encouraged to decide on their postgraduate research direction during the course of their undergraduate studies and to choose their electives accordingly.

The primary purpose of the MSc in Biotechnology is to provide students with specialized advanced education and training while meeting the requirements of a specific research component so that students can master the required experimental and technological skills and necessary fieldwork competencies such as innovation, decision-making, strategic thinking, and organizational skills.

Biotechnology offers a diversification of biological knowledge, predominantly of microorganisms, to equip you in the identification and characterization of bacteria contaminating industrially significant products. Your local supermarket supplies beverages and food products that can be infected with fungi and bacteria. Your girlfriends’ make-up can also be contaminated with microbes. Knowledge of the potential contaminants and techniques to screen these products are essential to maintain product quality.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Preference will be given to applicants with the highest final grade point averages for their preceding degree and qualifying applicants may be subjected to an entrance evaluation examination. Admission is furthermore contingent on the availability of supervisors and/or research projects within the participating departments.
