5 Biotechnology Degree Programs in Hungary

The Academic Program in BSc in Biotechnology offered by the Faculty of Pharmacy leads to the degree of Biotechnologist. The program provides a deep theoretical understanding of natural sciences with hands-on experience in cutting-edge technologies in biotechnology. The diploma issued by the Faculty of Pharmacy is accepted by all European Union member states and several other countries. The program aims to educate students to become immediately employable after graduation, hence industrial or research laboratory placements for sufficient work experience are integral parts of the program. Using state-of-the-art laboratory techniques students can also experience laboratory research and have a great variety of further education possibilities to choose from in medical, pharmaceutical, environmental, and food biotechnology.

The curriculum is practice-oriented and provides the necessary skills for graduates to start work immediately after graduation in the biotech or pharma industries or to enroll in a PhD program. The programme in MSc in Biotechnology provides opportunities for students to become involved in research activities in various departments of the Faculties of Medicine and Science or to prepare diploma work in biotechnology-based SMEs (Small or Medium Enterprises) or in the pharmaceutical industry.

Biotechnology is a dynamically developing discipline whose main goal is to find biologically based solutions to various industrial, agricultural, and biomedical challenges. The Biotechnology BSc course at the University of Debrecen is based on the following pillars: (i) completion of a broad-spectrum natural science and IT module, (ii) acquisition of basic skills in molecular biology, and (iii) transfer of basic knowledge of natural science, IT and molecular biology in the rich repertoire of biotechnology subjects. It is important that we provide students with a large number of laboratory practices, with the help of which students can become familiar with the main branches of modern biotechnology.

The Bachelor Degree in Biosciences and Biotechnology is an interclass degree: it consists of a common first year, where the student is provided with a solid base in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and cell biology, followed by a second and third year when the student follows either the program leading to the Biology or Biotechnology degree. Upon enrollment in the interclass degree, students must indicate the qualification desired (Biology or Biotechnology); however, the final decision between the two program degrees can be delayed to the third year, provided that the missing credits have been fully covered.
