In the Photography program, you will learn skills from darkroom to digital photography. Unlike some other photography programs, which focus on commercial photography, OCAD U’s Photography program is more artistic and experimental. The program emphasizes your artistic vision while encouraging you to explore a broad range of issues and styles. In the upper-year levels, you’ll gain real-world experience through a placement in the arts community or through an exhibition of your photographs.

The BFA degree builds on the core curriculum of fundamental principles by emphasizing the aesthetic and conceptual skills necessary for a professional portfolio. After completing the core curriculum, students choose to focus on commercial or editorial, fine art, or documentary courses. Upon graduation, students will be required to demonstrate an individual style and a unique approach to their chosen area of study.

The three-year course of study in Photography shapes young professionals, which will be able to work in the of commercial, artistic and documentary fields, as well as for video production.

The study program of Photography aims to promote individual humanistic orientation, aesthetic perception, critical and creative thinking, social activity, freedom of communication and responsibility, develop the professional skills of a photography specialist based on traditional, alternative, and digital photography and innovations of professional activity in the various fields of application of the art of photography, and enhance the abilities necessary for organizing photographer’s activities considering the changes in the environment and perceiving the importance of lifelong learning.

The Bachelor’s Programme in Photography at FAMU is a three-year full-time study track taught in English that provides a rigorous, creative and intellectually grounded introduction to photographic practice. It welcomes students directly after secondary school as well as applicants with previous studies or artistic experience, offering a balanced combination of technical training, conceptual development and theoretical reflection. The programme aims to cultivate photographers capable of articulating a strong personal vision, mastering a wide spectrum of media, and engaging critically with contemporary visual culture.
