Carleton’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is a four-year Honours degree that places a strong emphasis on the interactions between people and their environments. The BSW program combines a liberal arts education with professional social work education. In your first year, you will take a range of courses outside of social work and two social work courses that will introduce you to the profession of social work and the programs and policies of the state.

Carleton’s Bachelor of Global and International Studies (BGInS) is the first program in Canada to emphasize approaches that are both global (issues concerning the world) and international (between two or more countries).

Strengthen the health and development of young people, families and communities. The Bachelor of Child and Youth Care (Honours) prepares students for front-line and supervisory roles supporting the care, welfare and positive development of children, youth, families and communities. The program combines theoretical and experiential learning, including two field placements and a 14-week work term, with specialized training in nature-based programming, crisis intervention and social innovation. Industry certifications, including crisis training and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), are embedded in the curriculum.

The Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management program (BPAPM) draws directly from Carleton’s research and professional strengths in the study of public administration, international affairs, politics, and journalism. Examine current critical issues in society and develop the skills and knowledge to address them.

The Bachelor of Early Learning and Community Development (Honours) combines theory and practice to prepare graduates to work with children, families and communities in early learning and community development settings. The program includes mentorships, three varied field placements and a semester-long work term, and graduates are eligible to apply to become registered members of the College of Early Childhood Educators (Ontario).

Bachelor of Public Safety (Honours) (Co-op)— Four-year honours degree combining theoretical and experiential instruction to prepare graduates for careers in public safety, emergency management, security and countering crime. The program includes applied research and paid co-op work term(s).

The program in Law and Justice encourages a broad critical understanding of the nature, role, and function of our legal and judicial institutions. The approach to your education clearly distinguishes us from law schools, whose mandate is to prepare students for the practice of law in accordance with guidelines established by the Law Society.

For over 20 years GPRC has been offering this program in partnership with the University of Calgary and has hosted it in several communities across northern Alberta. A degree in Social Work prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary for generalist social work practice. This includes such diverse settings as schools, hospitals, treatment facilities, corrections, planning councils, family and youth service agencies, and long-term care centers. Social workers are licensed by the Alberta College of Social Workers.

Yukon University offers, in partnership with the University of Regina, a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree. The University of Regina grants the degree and the program is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. The BSW program provides students with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, values, and skills necessary to practice social work in northern and remote communities. Particular attention is given to the social needs, values and aspirations of Yukon First Nations.

Throughout the program of studies, emphasis is placed upon the practical application of law. Students are required to do a major research project accomplished in the research seminar under the guidance of a professor of the Faculty of Canon Law. The JCL degree enables clergy, religious, and lay persons to hold a variety of roles in tribunals and diocesan curias. It also prepares them to serve as key leaders and advisors in dioceses, religious institutes, societies of apostolic life, and various Catholic organizations. The JCL is always pursued concurrently with the Master in Canon Law.

This major — unique to the Alberta School of Business — incorporates courses on both Economics and Law, examining the economic and legal aspects of business and how they combine to create the environment in which firms operate. You’ll gain an understanding of the economic and legal aspects of business decisions, and of how the law affects businesses and institutions.
