Becoming fluent in a second language such as Spanish adds value to your education, broadens your worldview, and makes you more attractive to employers in today’s global marketplace. And it pays off! Bilingual employees will earn up to four percent more than other graduates. Carroll University’s Spanish program provides you with direct linguistic contact with a culture different from your own. It’s the key to understanding one another—and the world. After all, a culture expresses itself primarily through its language and its literature. In the Spanish program, you’ll acquire indispensable skills in communication, training in problem-solving, and the kind of understanding of cultures other than our own that is possible only through language. You’ll learn to speak, read and write Spanish as you study phonetics and Latin American or Hispanic history and culture. As a Spanish major, we encourage you to spend a summer, semester, or year abroad, for a truly immersive experience in another culture. A Spanish major is a natural complement to many other areas such as business, pre-law, pre-medical programs or to such fields as English, fine arts, theater arts, history, political science, communication, psychology, mathematics, sociology, or the natural sciences. In our program, you can easily add a second major in Spanish to your studies and still graduate in four years. If you cannot complete a full second major, a minor in another field is very common, as is a language minor to accompany some other primary specialization. You can also study abroad during a summer, semester, or full academic year by applying to the International and Off-Campus Programs Office. Recent graduates have studied in Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Spain.

The Department of Africana Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities offers a major and a minor in Africana Studies. Africana Studies is primarily a discipline which investigates the social, cultural, political and aesthetic dimensions of Africana peoples' experiences. These experiences range from earliest human civilizations through the tragic era of enslavement, colonization and involuntary dispersal through forced migration and displacement of African peoples. The intellectual framework that sets Africana Studies apart from other disciplines is that it explores the subject area from the perspective of Africana peoples' interests, aspirations, possibilities, and envisioned destinies. The foundation of the discipline rests on an understanding and appreciation of African peoples' worldview and philosophy of life as the starting point for all Africana intellectual inquiry. The BA degree and minor program offered by the department emphasizes an examination of the theoretical and empirical characteristics of the African world experience from both a contemporary and historical perspective.

Liberal Studies (LBS) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major for students who intend to become elementary and special education teachers or to pursue related graduate work. Courses leading to the B.A. in Liberal Studies focus on the subject areas taught in elementary schools as well as professional preparation and early fieldwork. LBS is a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved Elementary Subject Matter Preparation Program (ESM). LBS also offers two Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEP) in which students earn a B.A. and a credential for teaching elementary school (multiple subjects) or special education (education specialist mild/moderate).

The Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures offers courses in thirteen different languages; majors in French, Spanish, Italian, and two Romance languages; a concentration in Hispanic Linguistics; and minors in Classical Studies, French, Hispanic Linguistics, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese Language and Lusophone Cultures.

Build, solidify and gain fluency in the language and cultures of the French-speaking world. Along the way, you’ll prepare for and then embark on a French-speaking, off-campus program. After you return, you'll continue to study current issues in France, West Africa, North America, or the Caribbean.
