The aim of the study program Foreign Languages and Cultures is to train well-qualified bachelors in the Humanities with a broad range of knowledge and competencies, who have a knowledge of Italian, French, or German (C1 level) and an additional foreign language (B2 level). Graduates will grasp the fundamentals of linguistics, literary studies, translation, intercultural communication, and production of spoken and written texts, and become familiar with the culture of a chosen country, its history, and political and economic situation. Students will be able to translate from the source into the target language and vice versa, interpret and analyze different countries’ cultural phenomena in the European and global context. Graduates will be able to apply their linguistic, communicative, cultural, social, and other competencies in professional and academic areas.

The objective of this degree is to acquire the linguistic and sociocultural knowledge necessary for the expression and comprehension of foreign languages such as English, German, French and Portuguese, enhancing descriptive and analytical skills that allow deepening the synchronous and diachronic study. of these languages and their literary productions. The first-cycle program - East European Studies: Languages and Discourses—is meticulously crafted to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Eastern Europe, a region pivotal to global political and economic stability. Renowned for its political, cultural, linguistic, and religious diversity, Eastern Europe has witnessed a multitude of historical and contemporary conflicts, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.

This course concentrates on business, economics, communication and tourism, all in the context of a desire to learn modern languages. Students are prepared for careers in an international, multilingual environment and are encouraged to develop, at the same time, knowledge, creativity and pragmatism.  

Liberal Studies (LBS) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major for students who intend to become elementary and special education teachers or to pursue related graduate work. Courses leading to the B.A. in Liberal Studies focus on the subject areas taught in elementary schools as well as professional preparation and early fieldwork. LBS is a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved Elementary Subject Matter Preparation Program (ESM). LBS also offers two Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEP) in which students earn a B.A. and a credential for teaching elementary school (multiple subjects) or special education (education specialist mild/moderate).

The degree in Applied Galician and Spanish Philology offers specialized training in the field of Galician and Spanish languages and literature so that people who are studying these studies can apply their knowledge and values to the progress of society through the use of digital tools and a complementary command of modern languages (such as English, French, German or Portuguese). He uses the term Philology understood as the collaboration between various disciplines and subdisciplines always focused on the word and its texts, and the adjective Applied, since it uses the knowledge of basic science for its practical application.

The Department of Africana Studies in the College of Arts and Humanities offers a major and a minor in Africana Studies. Africana Studies is primarily a discipline which investigates the social, cultural, political and aesthetic dimensions of Africana peoples' experiences. These experiences range from earliest human civilizations through the tragic era of enslavement, colonization and involuntary dispersal through forced migration and displacement of African peoples. The intellectual framework that sets Africana Studies apart from other disciplines is that it explores the subject area from the perspective of Africana peoples' interests, aspirations, possibilities, and envisioned destinies. The foundation of the discipline rests on an understanding and appreciation of African peoples' worldview and philosophy of life as the starting point for all Africana intellectual inquiry. The BA degree and minor program offered by the department emphasizes an examination of the theoretical and empirical characteristics of the African world experience from both a contemporary and historical perspective.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistic Mediation (Class L-12) at SSML Pisa is a three-year university course that provides comprehensive training in modern languages, intercultural communication, and global studies. It is designed to develop both linguistic excellence and professional skills.

The basic objective of this degree is to train translation and interpreting professionals capable of identifying and applying quality cultural and linguistic mediation tools and strategies, as well as preparing them for future specialization. Students will choose between three options: English-Spanish, French-Spanish and English-Galician. Whichever option is chosen, a second language (English, French, German or Portuguese) will be studied further.
