32 American Studies Bachelor's Degree Programs

Students work in an international and intercultural context in order to increase their knowledge of the language, literature, history, politics, art cinema etc. of several English-speaking countries (Great Britain, the United States, Ireland, Canada etc.) They also choose options which will prepare them for the world of work (eg. Business English, Didactics of English, Interpretation etc.) Students must also take classes in a second modern language and may study a third one if they wish.

The Department of American Culture and Literature uses an interdisciplinary approach in the study of the United States, its people, and its culture.

Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) is a broad-based, liberal arts and sciences major that focuses on developing exemplary skills in written and oral communication, textual analysis, critical thinking, research methods, and the ability to bring a wide range of resources to bear in approaching complex problems. Because it combines knowledge systems across the meta-disciplines of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences, an IDS major is great preparation for both the workplace and for entry into graduate or professional schools. IDS is part of a national network of Programs for Accelerated College Education (PACE) that are designed for working, adult students who want to earn a bachelor’s degree in a reasonable period of time while they maintain a full-time job. While all admitted students are welcome, IDS/PACE students are primarily transfers who enter CSUDH with 60 units and junior-class standing.

Our courses engage multifaceted understandings of indigenous communities; settlement; colonialism; migration; race/racism; and social, economic, cultural and political change. Majors develop the methodological, theoretical, and research skills to conduct independent interdisciplinary research. The American Studies department is also distinct in our commitment to community-based learning.

The African American and African studies major informs students about the social, political, psychological, historical and intellectual experiences of Africans and their descendants throughout the world.

The American Studies concentration will give students a broad understanding of the history, culture, and people of America. American Studies encourages students to explore the relationships among ideas, institutions, values, and aesthetic forms as they have evolved in the United States. Students must take courses in each of the following areas: history, government, the arts, literature, behavioral sciences, and a capstone course.
