Women and Gender Studies were founded model of the โthree-prongedโ stool: teaching, research, and activism. We offer an exciting array of classes, at both the undergraduate and graduate level that interrogates systems of inequality, including gender, sexuality, race, class, ableism, religion, and region of the world. By choosing to pursue work in women and gender studies, students at all levels engage in an interdisciplinary exploration of gender in social, political, cultural, and economic life; gender in history; women and the media; feminist theory; the relationship between sex and gender; the impact of sex, race, class, disability, and sexual orientation on peopleโs lives; and the ways in which gender stereotypes influence the self in relationship to others. Students in many courses have the opportunity to investigate these issues from a cross-cultural and global perspective.

The minor in Women's Studies was approved in 1986 and the first Women's Studies minor graduated in 1988. In 1997, the program was significantly expanded to include the study of gender. Women and Gender Studies became a major in 2006. In fall of 2013, a new minor in LGBTQ Studies was launched.
