Our BA (Hons) Voice (Performance and Pedagogy) degree is for aspiring voice professionals and future voice teachers who have a passion for singing or want to bring out the best in others’ voices. You’ll focus on vocal performance, industry skills and pedagogy, and develop a comprehensive foundation in technical skills and methodologies.

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) offers students seven concentrated areas of study. The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) with a concentration in Vocal Performance is designed for vocalists who are planning careers as performing musicians.

As a bachelor’s student, you will study not only singing but also piano, vocal chamber music, expression techniques, music theory, aural skills, and music history, as well as pedagogy and languages. You can also choose to complete the required amount of pedagogical studies to fulfill the requirements for working as a teacher. Through your voice pedagogy studies, you will gain theoretical and practical insight into vocal lessons, vocal coaching methods, and vocal physiology. During teaching practice, you will get the chance to teach practice pupils under the supervision of a supervising teacher. You will develop your pedagogical vision by observing classes and working on your teaching portfolio.

The purpose of establishing the Department of Song and Vocal Chamber Music was to provide students with a creative space for the interaction of singer and pianist, which is one of the most important forms of collaboration within the Institute of Vocal Studies, both in the sphere of student training and in the broader artistic sense. Vocal chamber music, along with the art of opera, is one of the cornerstones of the teaching process at the Institute of Vocal Studies. The creative interaction between the instructor who teaches the major (solo singing) and the pianist who accompanies and educates the student in the classes offered by the Department shapes the technique and artistic personality of the singer.

The Department of Vocal Studies was established at the beginning of the term of office of Rector prof. Stefan Stuligrosz (1967-1981). The first head of the Department of Vocal Studies at the Faculty of Vocal Studies and Acting of the I.J. Paderewski Academy of Music was prof. Irena Winiarska. Subsequently, the function was taken over by prof. Ewa Wdowicka, and since 2005 the position was held by prof. dr hab. Grażyna Flicińska-Panfil. In 2024, the position was taken over by dr hab. Marzena Michałowska.

Come and study classical music and opera at the Academy of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University at Västerås Castle! You will be studying with some of the country’s foremost music coaches. Under their expert guidance, you will have the opportunity to reach your full potential as an instrumentalist and a singer. The teachers have extensive and international experience, both as musicians and teachers, as well as a wide network of contacts within the field. All teachers aim is to enhance every student's musical knowledge and instrumental/vocal techniques and skills as well as enhance and develop their artistic expression towards an increasingly personal and independent approach. The programme has four specialisations, leading to a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music: String instruments, Wind instruments, Voice, Keyboard instruments.

University study program Music Education with a focus on education prepares students in the theoretical and practical specialization of music pedagogy and provides basic knowledge for a job in education. The study combines three components of Middle school / Junior High school / Secondary school / High school / Junior High school / Senior High school teacher training: subject training, general and subject training didactics, and teacher propaedeutics (pedagogical-psychological training). The obligatory basis of the study consists of music-theoretical components of education: music theory, harmony, counterpoint, musical forms, organology, history of music, etc. Improving musical skills is provided by vocal and instrumental preparation, intonation and auditory analysis, choral conducting. Everything is focused on the work of a lecturer, assistant teacher, educator, cultural assistant, etc. The next part is the didactics of music education, listening, and assistant practice at school. These activities prepare the graduate for the next level of study - a master's degree in music education. The study program in the major plan respects the balance of subject, didactic and pedagogical-psychological components according to the standards of teacher training of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic. Pedagogical-psychological preparation includes subjects of pedagogy, psychology, and special pedagogy, including pedagogical-psychological practice and aims to prepare for the subsequent master's study of teaching. A part of the study program major is a bachelor's thesis. Graduates possess knowledge and skills in both components: special and general education. They acquire basic awareness about teachers’ work through an introduction to pedagogy, social pedagogy and motivational practice, and basic psychological disciplines. The curriculum's outcome is not a qualification for teaching.

During your studies, you will receive the necessary knowledge and skills in African-American music, music culture, and performance practices to become a professional. Upon graduating, you may take on demanding roles as a musician, bandleader, composer&arranger, and pedagogue. Finnish jazz professionals such as Timo Lassy, Verneri Pohjola, Aki Rissanen, and Kalle Kalima are all alumni of the Sibelius Academy who have established themselves in the Finnish and international music scene. Jazz students complete studies in ensemble playing, aural skills, rhythm, and arrangement that support their major subject. Optional studies and possible minor subject studies are also included in the degree. The degree also includes language and music technology studies.

The Department of Choral Conducting, operating within the structure of the Institute of Conducting, was established in 2019 and continues the tradition of previous units operating at the Academy since 1972: the Department of Choral Conducting founded by Prof. Stefan Stuligrosz, the Department of Conducting Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles and, again, the Department of Choral Conducting. The successive heads included Prof. Stefan Stuligrosz (1972-1982), Prof. Stanisław Kulczyński (1982-2005), Prof. Janusz Dzięcioł (2005-2007), Prof. Leon Zaborowski (2007-2012), Prof. Magdalena Wdowicka-Mackiewicz (2012-2020). Currently, the Department is headed by Prof. Marek Gandecki.
