Anthropology is the exploration of the human condition. In coursework, individual study and field schools, you examine an astonishing range of human experience across space and time. Our curriculum incorporates a wide variety of themes in cultural anthropology as well as archaeology, and you can pursue a geographic specialization in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, South America or North America. Africana Studies at Connecticut College employs an interdisciplinary and transnational approach to the study of peoples in Africa and throughout the African diaspora. The departments of Anthropology, Art History, Dance, Economics, Education, English, Film Studies, French, Government, History, Hispanic Studies, Human Development, Music, Philosophy, and Sociology contribute courses to this program covering Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean and Europe. Africana Studies critically engages the historic and contemporary life, thought and cultures of African peoples. Africana Studies seeks to explore the linkages among African peoples while also highlighting a multiplicity of experiences through the lenses of issues such as class, ethnicity, gender, nation, and sexuality.

Healthy and competitive financial markets and institutions are essential in spreading opportunity and fighting poverty. Because of their role in financing new ideas, financial markets fuel the process of “creative destruction,” whereby old ideas and organizations are constantly challenged and replaced by new, better ones. Without vibrant, innovative financial markets, economies would invariably ossify and decline.

Any student who declared a major in Educational Studies prior to the start of the 2023-2024 academic year will be held to the major requirements for the catalog year in which they declared. For example, if a student declared a major in Educational Studies in Fall 2022 then the student is held to the requirements in the 2022-2023 academic year catalog. However, students who declared a major in Educational Studies prior to the 2023-2024 academic year may opt to fulfill the new program requirements instead of the requirements for the academic year in which they declared. Talk to your faculty advisor if you wish to switch to the new program requirements.

To study classics is to enter into a world that stretches from Europe to Western Asia and North Africa, and in time from the Stone Age to the fall of Constantinople and beyond. No field gives you a wider experience of the liberal arts. People with classics degrees include Porter Goss, former head of the CIA; Jerry Brown, governor of California; and J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books. We vigorously support students who apply for fellowships, grants, travel abroad, entrance into graduate school and a wide variety of internships and jobs during and after college.

Look through an exceptionally global lens and use a variety of methods to explore your interests. As a history major, you might make a short film, write historical fiction, create a museum exhibit or collect oral histories from immigrants. Faculty have expertise in China, Japan, India, Germany, Italy, Russia, the Andes, Pan-Africa and the American West, South and New England.

This major is a convergence of many scientific fields, including modern biological chemistry, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, botany and biology. It covers most of the requirements for the Medical College Admission Test. Our English curriculum covers the globe and the centuries: everything from medieval Anglo-Saxon epics to 21st-century African novels. We sharpen minds and unleash imaginations. By reading a wide range of texts critically and creatively, you develop writing, thinking and verbal communication skills that will serve you throughout your life and in any line of work. Africana Studies represents a tradition of intellectual inquiry born from the Black freedom struggle and is thus fundamentally concerned with issues of slavery, colonialism, racism, and shifting notions of Blackness. It is a dynamic field at Connecticut College that employs an interdisciplinary and transnational approach to cultural production & expression, historical investigation, and social & structural analysis in order to examine and understand the universal and particular experiences of Black people in Africa and throughout the African diaspora.

The interdisciplinary minor in applied statistics is designed to help students develop a broad understanding of methods for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. Students learn the fundamental principles of statistics, experiment with techniques for examining and drawing conclusions from data, and study concrete applications of statistics to a variety of fields.

We offer small classes, lots of interaction with professors and research opportunities that at many institutions would be limited to graduate students. All of our faculty are engaged in research that incorporates meaningful participation by undergraduates.

Our American studies program is one of the strongest in the country, and every year it is among the top majors at Connecticut College. We focus on two critical issues: race and ethnicity and the role of the United States in the world. The program is innovative, dynamic and interdisciplinary. After you complete the core requirements for the major, you have the opportunity to concentrate on comparative race and ethnicity; expressive arts and cultural studies; or politics, society and policy. You also participate in community service, fieldwork or an internship. Our graduates are shaping thinking about critical issues in government and non-governmental organizations, and in graduate studies and academia.

It is the official language of more than 20 countries and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. If you minor in Arabic Studies, you study Arab language, politics, culture, society, literature, film and history. Our language courses emphasize speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and content courses are interdisciplinary.
