The Studio Arts Option allows students to combine two or more studio disciplines that, cumulatively, are the equivalent of one major. The flexibility of this program enables students to pursue studies in ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, multi-media, or printmaking to achieve objectives specific to individual, artistic goals. These goals are established through careful counseling with Athens State University faculty. Each student is assisted in setting up a well-coordinated, diversified program of fine art studies. The senior major exhibition culminates the study. This degree option is traditional, and opportunities following graduation include graduate school and professional artists.

The Elementary Education Program at Athens State University, leading to a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.) degree with a major in Elementary Education, is designed to prepare educators to deliver developmentally appropriate instruction to young children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The Behavioral Science Program at Athens State University is committed to guiding students to become psychologically and sociologically literate citizens of the 21st century by providing a broad and balanced understanding of psychology and sociology as a social and natural science. Students gain knowledge, skills, and values consistent with the science and application of psychological and sociological principles. The program emphasizes the value of psychology and sociology for developing insight into one’s own and others’ behavior and mental processes at the individual and institutional levels. In addition, the program focuses on recognizing, understanding, and respecting the complexity of sociocultural diversity. Students pursuing a Behavioral Science degree are prepared to enter a variety of careers such as social service, advocacy, marketing, or publication. In addition, the degree prepares students for graduate studies, especially in social work.

A degree in Educational Studies prepares students for careers in educational settings outside of the traditional classroom. This degree provides students with foundational knowledge and fundamental pedagogical skills that will prepare them for work in alternative educational environments and businesses, and other organizations throughout the state such as non-profits, community, and recreational and human resource programs.

The Computer Graphics Option allows students to effectively identify and solve meaningful problems using creativity and critical thinking with computer graphics. The emphasis for students is on real-world, commercial, practical projects. Students will invent a body of work that is beautiful and intelligent with a final portfolio that is engaging and imaginative. The senior major exhibition culminates the study. This degree option offers graduates the opportunity to freelance, enter the job market or matriculate to graduate school.
