The Undergraduate Anthropology Program at Brandon University encompasses three of the discipline’s four traditional major sub-fields: Socio-Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, and Biological Anthropology.

The B.A. Track in Cultural Anthropology focuses on the issues, modes of inquiry, fieldwork strategies, data collection methods and analysis, and ethnographic representation forms that characterize contemporary cultural anthropology.

Anthropology is the exploration of what it means to be human. Although anthropology is often associated with faraway places and remote excavations, anthropologists are increasingly involved in research on education, health, food, migration, sports, tourism, and cultural identity.

Sociology and Anthropology students are curious about how society and culture work and care deeply about solving social problems to make the world better. Typically, students choose research methodologies that most match their interests, work closely with professors in the classroom and through independent research projects, and push the boundaries of their knowledge through study, travel and community engagement.

If you find yourself watching people and fascinated by why they do what they do, then anthropology may be the major for you! As a Linfield anthropology major, you will develop many skills, including interviewing, techniques such as ‘deep hanging out,’ and archaeological methods to research people in our own and other cultures, past as well as the present.

Students who are interested in the study of anthropology can incorporate courses of interest into an ad hoc major. It is recommended that students make an appointment with a faculty advisor to discuss this option.

Anthropology brings students and scholars together to understand the human experience in all of its fullness. Students enhance this big-picture understanding through stimulating research, fieldwork, and courses that integrate anthropology's historical, cultural, and biological perspectives.

This degree introduces students to the process of independent qualitative research. Students learn how to put together their research questions and proposals, understand how to construct a literature review as the basis for good, theoretically-informed research, train in how to conduct ethnographic research, and how to write up that research into an essay form.

Anthropology's unique and holistic approach to the study of all humankind (prehistoric, historic and contemporary) is made possible through the integration of four sub-fields: Archaeology, Linguistics, Physical Anthropology and Socio-Cultural Anthropology. Students apply anthropological approaches to address research questions through local field study, community engagement projects, and skills-based classes.
