Guided by experienced faculty and community mentors, students earning a Social Justice Studies degree explore the reality and consequences of systemic oppression. They also learn how to respond to those realities and consequences in ways that alleviate immediate suffering and lead to social transformation.

Trevecca’s Bachelor of Science in social justice is an interdisciplinary program with courses in business, law, sociology, social work, science, and religion. A Social Change major from Graceland is a way to give students an education that cultivates and creates a transformative community beyond the walls of the university. The Social Change Major is designed for students in all fields to prepare them to enter the work world as leaders who are enabled to create positive change.

Students in the Social Justice and Human Rights programs examine a wide variety of oppressions such as racism, sexism, heterosexism, anti-immigrant oppression, ableism, economic injustice, animal exploitation, and environmental injustice, as well as related denials of human rights, such as human trafficking, settler colonialism, mass incarceration, use of sweatshop and child labor, unequal access to education, and voter disenfranchisement.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor's Bureau Statistics, employment of social workers is expected to increase by 22 percent during the coming decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. It is an expanding field that addresses challenging issues such as family dynamics, inequality, patterns of behavior, and forces for social change and resistance. Sociologists' research can be applied to virtually any aspect of social life, from crime to corporate downsizing.

The BS-CJ degree is oriented to pre-service and in-service criminal justice employees, particularly those who wish to be promoted to supervisory and management roles, work in state and federal agencies, or attend graduate school. Graduates of the program work at local, state, and federal agencies. Other students who commonly seek the BS-CJ are those with career interests in social service and rehabilitation organizations working with children or families in need.

Graduates of Livingstone College's Social Work Program are prepared for entry-level professional employment in public and private agencies such as child welfare agencies, schools, hospitals, and service agencies for the elderly and handicapped. The Crime & Justice Studies (CJS) program brings together the fields of criminology, criminal justice, and justice studies. Bridging the social sciences and humanities, CJS specializes in the study of the criminal justice system's history, policies, politics, and procedures. Our multidisciplinary program meets the needs of undergraduate students interested in entering the fields of law enforcement, the courts, corrections, probation, parole, social services, youth services, public policy, research, non-profit, and non-governmental or community organizations.

The Justice Studies major is designed to provide students with a broad professional education that will prepare them for a variety of fulfilling careers in federal, state, and local criminal justice and human service agencies. The curriculum is strongly oriented to learning about crime, justice, and policy through the lens of the social and behavioral sciences. The major has three separate emphasis areas, including Policing and Law Enforcement, Law and the Legal System, and Corrections and Human Services. Its commitment to developing a well-rounded professionally oriented student further includes field internships with criminal justice, legal, and social service agencies.

A degree in criminal justice gives students an understanding of the three main elements of the justice system: the courts, policing and corrections. The study of criminal justice and corrections involves research methods for criminology, criminological theory and the psychology behind criminal behavior.

Race and Resistance Studies (RRS) examines both the race-related processes that underlie many social problems and the multiple forms of resistance and struggle aimed at achieving racial social justice. Our analytical approach is comparative, relational, interdisciplinary, and intersectional. The program will 1) provide majors with a solid understanding of key theories and approaches through a set of core courses required of all students, 2) provide all students with an overview of key areas of concern, including histories of resistance, gender issues, transnational issues, and cultural production, 3) Allow students to choose electives emphasizing particular areas of interest, and 4) develop students' abilities to work in community organizations.
