Pitt-Johnstown offers four-year degree programs leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in seven secondary education areas of concentration. The secondary education major prepares students to teach 7th - 12th grades in their selected area(s) of study.  

Become a secondary school educator. As a student in the College of Education and Human Services, you’ll observe and assist in classrooms, learn to use a range of teaching methods and complete an entire semester of full-time student teaching. Secondary education majors choose a liberal arts or sciences discipline to focus their studies.

The Teacher Education program prepares candidates for certification in grades K-12. The Secondary Education program requires 27 credits of Education coursework in professional foundations and studies and 13 credits during internship. Students apply for admission to the program after successfully completing nine credits of Education coursework in professional foundations. During the course of the studies, candidates may be asked to reapply to the program if their GPA falls below 3.0.

Our Secondary Education degree prepares candidates to work in the general education classroom at the middle and high school levels. Instructors carefully structure and coordinate field experiences, giving students the opportunity to practice several teaching methods that will prepare them for a successful student teaching experience and career. A signature part of the Secondary Education program at Loras is the Professional Development School (PDS). Each Loras student will participate in diverse field experiences in technology-rich public and private schools.

As a middle and high school teacher, you’ll combine your passion for a particular subject with your role as an advocate, collaborator, and leader in the classroom. To prepare for a career teaching in a middle school or high school, you'll combine a secondary education major with one of our subject-focused majors. Carroll University’s secondary education program provides you with the knowledge and skills to be a successful educator in a middle school and high school setting. You’ll study equitable and inclusive teaching practices, the role of inquiry in teaching and learning, and methods for content area teaching. In our secondary education program, you'll major in the subject you want to teach: biology, chemistry, English, environmental science, history, mathematics, political science, psychology, or sociology and obtain licensure as a teacher in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies. You develop depth in your content area, as well as the breadth of knowledge you will need to teach concepts across various grade levels. Carroll education students benefit from strong partnerships with local school districts, which means you’ll have opportunities to observe and assist in real classrooms and build experiences in school settings, beginning before your final year. You will graduate from Carroll with a wide variety of experiences in learning, teaching, and networking, all preparing you to transform education in our schools and communities. The combination of a strong liberal arts background with the scholarly application of theory, methods, and skills related to teaching and learning is integral to our program.

The Secondary Teacher Education program prepares teacher candidates for certification in grades 6-12. It requires 27 credits of Education coursework in professional foundations and studies and 13 credits during internship. Students apply for admission to the program after successfully completing nine credits of Education coursework in professional foundations. During the course of the studies, candidates may be asked to reapply to the program if their GPA falls below 3.0 in general course work and 3.0 in their selected content area(s) of endorsements such as biology, chemistry, communication arts, earth science, English, math, natural sciences, physical education/health, psychology, or social studies. There are separate degree requirements for each major and minor endorsement area.

Secondary Educators are passionate about helping their students discover the wonders of learning. They are eager to explore content in deep and meaningful ways with their students in grades 6 through 12, teaching at a higher level of cognitive complexity than typically experienced in middle or elementary school classrooms. Because the secondary education field is so content-focused, our students major in their content area which gives them a firm foundation from which to build appropriately challenging and integrated lessons that will impact their students for years to come.

As a student in the Thiel College Education Department, students will experience high-quality education programs based on the latest “Effective Schools” research that includes instructional teaching strategies based on the work of Robert Marzano, Jay McTighe, Grant Wiggins, Charlotte Danielson, and other current leaders in the field of education. As a history teacher, you’ll do more than simply teach the facts, events, and dates. You’ll also impart the ethical standards and wisdom developed over centuries of human history.

The Department of Education provides students with an opportunity to gain a firm foundation in the elements of secondary education. As a student in the Thiel College Education Department, students will experience high-quality education programs based on the latest “Effective Schools” research that includes instructional teaching strategies based on the work of Robert Marzano, Jay McTighe, Grant Wiggins, Charlotte Danielson, and other current leaders in the field of education. Work with students to improve their written communications skills and help them develop both an understanding of and a love for English literature and writing.
