MTSU has a rich history of teaching students to fly, dating back to WWII when flight training took place right on campus. Today, graduates from the Professional Pilot program fly for every major US airline, at dozens of regional airlines, and for corporations and government agencies. To prepare for these opportunities, Pro Pilot students must complete flight operations coursework and achieve pilot certification up to and including the Commercial Multi-engine Certificate with an Instrument Rating.

Hampton University offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Flight Education degree program. Upon completion of the program, Flight Education students will have earned their private, instrument, commercial, and certified flight instructor certificates as they enter the job market prepared to seek employment as a pilot in the aviation industry. Students with these degrees can go to work in commercial aviation for companies like United Airlines or JetBlue.

Graduates of this degree program are eligible to apply for a Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) certificate at 1,000 flight hours, pursuant to the provisions of 14 CFR Part 61.160.

The Bachelors in Aeronautics program is the most comprehensive pilot degree program in CAU’s School of Aviation. Students learn the fundamentals of meteorology, aerodynamics, flight safety, aircraft performance, aviation weather, aircraft maintenance, aeronautical science, and aviation management. With up to four days a week of actual flying, students gain enough ground and flight instruction to earn six different aviation licenses/ratings upon graduation. The variety of licenses earned in the bachelors in aeronautics program (private pilot, instrument-rated pilot, certified flight instructor, certified flight instructor instrument, and commercial pilot-single and multi-engine) gives graduates a wider range of employment options to choose from. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in aeronautics program may be eligible to receive a 500- hour reduction in their FAA-mandated Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) flight hour requirement (normally 1500 hours) and the opportunity to interview for a flight instructor position. The Aviation Education Specialization is for students who wish to become Certified Flight Instructors and later be professional pilots in industry.
