The College of Nursing and Health Professions Food and Nutrition degree is designed to prepare graduates for entry into community food and nutrition-related careers including healthcare, business, and industry. The major provides broad coverage of the interpersonal, conceptual, analytical, and application skills necessary to perform in the food and nutrition-related field.

Lakeland’s Food Safety and Quality program blends the sciences of Biology and Chemistry with best business practices to prepare students for careers in food processing. Graduates will be well-rounded manufacturing professionals equipped to advance in the production of food while also possessing finance, management philosophy, and other skills needed to lead people to their potential.

The program will prepare graduates to work collaboratively and interprofessionally. In the James Madison University Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), students use creativity in learning from classroom experiences, case studies, computer applications, and problem-solving and decision-making projects. Students will gain research experience in their senior year. Students also obtain real-life experiences by completing a hospital-based practicum covering all aspects of dietetics practice.

The Nutrition Science program is a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) comprised of 128 semester hours of coursework related to science, food, nutrition, and dietetics. The nutritional science program offers a broad-based curriculum anchored in liberal arts and dedicated to evidenced-based coursework and relationship-centered practice. North Central's nutritional science degree will prepare students for supervised practice programs and careers as registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) or as entry-level professionals in fields related to health promotion, food service, and the food industry. Students pursuing a bachelor's degree may also choose to use the nutrition science major to prepare for graduate nutrition programs or other graduate programs in health care or science. The demand for nutrition professionals is increasing in many sectors, as awareness grows of the importance of food and nutrition for health, wellness, and disease prevention in the wider population. The Nutrition Science DPD curriculum provides both informational and experiential learning with the goal of developing knowledge, skills, and behaviors important in the rapidly changing field of human nutrition and dietetics.
