Essential to music theory majors are skills in harmony and voice leading, music analysis and instrumentation, as well as instrument studies. As a bachelor’s student, you will also study aural skills and music history.

Our Jazz Programme ‘New York Comes to Groningen’, offered by Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, is unique in the world for two reasons: 1. Alongside the strong Groningen staff, top New York artists travel to Groningen to teach in our programme on a rotating schedule. Every week of the year, you’ll be able to learn from another New York artist, allowing you to develop yourself into a professional jazz artist. 2. All students (bachelor and master) work with all of the NY-artists, irrespective of the student’s instrument. Bachelor’s courses include theory, ear training, composing, arranging and a wide variety of workshops. In addition, there are ongoing weekly lessons from a world-class Dutch faculty.

The BFA in Music Scoring & Composition is designed for those students who wish to focus on music composition and scoring for film, television, games, and other visual media. Balancing musicianship training with production skills to reflect a changing music industry, students will learn music theory, composition, harmony, orchestration, and arranging, focusing on creating emotion through music in synchronization with visual media.

We also value students who may not be majoring in music but want to enrich their college experience by participating in music groups, taking private lessons, or learning a new instrument.

Electroacoustic Composition invites you to explore music at the crossroads of art and technology. You’ll create with both acoustic instruments and electronics, showcase your work at concerts and workshops, and build the skills for exciting careers in music production, sound design, and media arts.
